help

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am new to the site and haveing a little problem were to post at.I hope this is the correct place. I am also having a problem with my 7.3. It stumbles and smokes and has no power when it is doing this. i have changed filter, harness under the valve cover and valve cover gaskets. It had new injectors and glow plugs about 15000 miles ago. It will run ok (sort of) and then start smoking and loses power. The smoke is white or light gray and smells like diesel. I had the codes checked and there was none. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

This is a great site !

Did you install the injectors? Are the injector stock? Sounds like you may have a sticky injector or a bad injector oring.

I think it might be as simple as checking your fuel bowl (I.E. Fuel filter housing) Put a pressure gage on it and see if your in speck of pressure if it drops test your fuel pump. if pump is fine lift the bed. check your sending unit. possibly that your sending unit is clogged. does your fuel gage work properly? if it is intermittent and unreliable at times. that would be my indicator for the sending unit.

I did not install the injectors the previous owner had them installed.Every once in awhile it will run ok then it goes back to stumbling, and smoking.

I checked connectors on all the wire this morning and I pulled the plug of the ICP It had oil inside the sensor were you plug it in at. Also I drove it after checking all this and it ran fine while it was cold and then started acting up once it got hot. Any suggestions of what to look at next?
Thanks

Well first off the ICP sensor connection with oil in it means the ICP sensor is bad and needs to be replaced. I would start there.

Huh???

White smoke would indicate an injector that is not firing properly or not seated properly. I would find someone with a scanner and run a buzz test and cylinder contrubution test. It sounds like it could be a UVC harness issue.

It is NOT a fuel pump issue...

Of course! I was really after the sending unit! Doing the cylinder contribution and injector buzz test will be fine, but the Injectors are starving for fuel! that is why I added testing the fuel pump! Not everything is cut and dry you have to start with the basics. Scan tool. Pressure tests. Compression test. These are part of the diagnostic procedures. plus asking questions and listening to the owner and truck is key.

Not necessarily. most of the time but not all of the time.

Not necessarily. most of the time but not all of the time.

Your kidding right?

White smoke means a lack of fuel??? Really??? really really?

White smoke is

A. Raw fuel leaking past a O ring or cracked cup or broken nozzle

or

B. Water/coolant leaking past a blown head gasket or cracked injector cup...

A lack of fuel does not cause a white smoke issue...
