injector removal tip question

Default injector removal tip question

so iam supposed to be picking up my new injectors this week, gonna pull the stock ones tomorrow morning and i was wondering if there is any trick to prevent hydra-locking the motor? can i bump the engine a couple times to clear the cylinders or something? thanks in advance fellas and happy 4th

When you put the new injectors in I believe you bump it with the glow plugs removed and it will push the oil out

+1 that is what i did, remove the glow plugs and BUMP the motor over a few times with the starter for a few seconds and it'll blow any oil out of the cyls. remember to re-install the valve covers with a couple of bolts or you might have a perty nasty mess under the hood.

ok so let make sure i got this right... pull the old injectors out and glow pluggs out put new injectors in and bump the starter a few times... so on the removal all i have to do is take retainers off and pry on them gently?

Pretty much,
carefully pull up the retaining clasps and work off the wiring harness
put a deep well socket down the glow plug hole and take them out (get new ones to replace the old as long as your in here, they're like $9 each for the motorcraft ones which are recommended, look up ryder fleet services they were cheap from them)
once the glows are out of the way remove the lower bolt and loosen the upper 2 turns
push the retainer upward so the upper bolt clears as you pry carefully upward on the injector.
Once all the injectors are out look down the bore and make sure no cups are messed up and that all o-ring chunks are removed.
I then like to take a Mityvac (brake vacuum you can borrow for free from auto parts store) and shove the hose down the cup hole and in the combustion area to suck the oil out of each cylinder, the back one on both sides will be flooded with oil.
I then shove a rag in each injector cup and bump the starter over a few turns to ensure its pretty cleared up.
Oil each injector with a nice medium layer of oil, not too light, but also don't cake it, just get it slick so it slides nicely and fully into the cup.
when putting them in push the retainer up a little as you put them in so the bolt goes up into the retainer slot, you might want a little rubber mallet to persuade them to seat a bit, your not going to wind up with it and let the injector have it, just a few love taps from about 4-5 inches will send them in far enough to get the lower retainer bolt back in.
Once you have all the injectors in, put the glow plugs back or replace them, then put the wiring harness back into place.
remove the hex plug from the HPOP reservoir and put some fresh oil in, fill it as full as you can get it.
Connect at least 1 jump car to the truck and bump the starter over for about 10 seconds.
Check the HPOP reservoir again and top it off.
Wait 5 minutes before using the starter again for 10 seconds. Don't be surprised if it won't start for several cycles of 10 sec on 5 minutes off. The jump car is sooooo crucial, your going to drain your batteries quick trying to get the air out of the lines and get the injectors pumping up and working again.
I usually do 2 cycles and then leave it overnight, next day it starts in the first or second cycle. It'll be rough at first as the air works out and all fluids go to solid, but you have to have blind faith that it will clear up.

Injectors might look intimidating the first time, but after one the jitters go away and you can cut the time it takes to change them down to only a few hours.

ok so i have the driver side valve cover off... i removed the retaing bolt that is on the top left of the injector and the retainer bolt for retaining bracket on the bottom side, went to pry gently on it and it is not budging is there something that iam missing?

yup nevermind i figured it out that wasnt as bad as i thaught, passenger side looks like its gonna be a soot blowing beotch to take care of. what do i torque the retainer bolts down to when i re install?

Tight. Seriously though, I never torqued them, just took them down to pretty snug-tight, don't go insane, but get em tight.

after doing the driver side the passenger side wasnt bad took me about a hour... now we will see how installing them is tomorrow night

there is no reason to ever touch the top bolt on the injector hold down. pull the bottom out slide the collar up and pry up, allen wrenches work great for this. after the injectors are out put the valve covers back on and turn the motor over by jumping the starter solenoid so it wont try to fire anything. let it spin over for a few seconds.. put the injectors back in all the way around and with the glowplugs out and valvecovers back on loose do the same thing. that is enough. you dont need to mighty vac anything.
