Default 4x4 help please :)

Ok we got some snow the other day ( 6 inches ) wife needed to go to town. she calls me and says that the 4x4 wont work. It has been working fine. I told her to shut the truck off and turn the key in the "on " position and flip the 4x4 switch to high. I told her to listen for the actuator. she said you can hear it engauge. She brought it to work and i messed around with it. switch is making the actuator engauge and disengauge. So I went to mess with the manual hubs. I couldnt get them to turn at all. solid as a rock. I removed them and took them apart to see what the heck was the matter. They are sopose to turn right?. When i had them gutted i still couldnt turn them. im frustrated. I put them back together and threw some grease in them and now the 4x4 works. it pops every now and then.I wanna say that the front hubs are junk. Can anybody steer me in the right direction??
Thanks alot,
Kyle

Any clicking or ratcheting noise from the front wheels) is a sign the automatic hubs are not locking.. An Easy test is to get under your truck and rotate the front axle shafts (not the drive shaft).. Rotating the axle shafts by hand mimics 4x4 being engaged. After a few revolutions an Autohub should lock in and be impossible to turn.. If you are able to keep turning the axle it indicates the hub is bad/gunked up. For manual hubs the test would be to get under the truck with the HUB unlocked (4x4 off) and verify the axle shaft rotates freely. Next lock the hub, the axle shaft should be impossible to turn. If you are able to turn the axle it indicates the hub is bad/gunked up.
try this out and see if it helps unless you cleaned them real well already

yes they are supposed to turn. i reccommend getting some new hubs, especially if they wont even turn out of the axle

Quite common for the auto hubs to shiet out on you... Replace them with high quality warn hubs and forget about the shift on the fly crap.
