cold or ambient air intake and why????
Hello Guys and Gals,
I want to upgrade my intake air and I've been checking out different styles. Banks, Airade, and tymar to mention a few. Some have dividers to separate the engine compartment from the filter. What is the propose of cold vs. ambient(engine compartment) air???
Thanks for the help!!

Cold air is more dense and contains more oxygen molecules, which inturn, will adds a bit of Hp and efficiency. Warm/hot/ ambient engine compartment air is less dense and contains less oxygen. That equals a bit less Hp.
Bigg Redd,
Thanks for the info. I've always wondered why it needed to be cold air.
I think a Tymar system with some type of divider around it is the way I'm going to go. I'm in the hvac business and it shouldn't be to hard to fab something to fit around the filter. Thanks again!!

Cold vs. Hot doesnt matter much when it comes to turbo charged engines, especially diesels like ours. When the air gets pulled in an charged by the turbo, it gets super heated anyways. This is why we have an intercooler. That being said, an open element filter isnt going to decrease your power compared to a CAI. I do have a shield around my 6637 filter, but that is to protect it from flying debris (mud, water, rocks, etc.). Instead of buying a tymar, Fabricate your own. Way cheaper and you can customize it to fit how you want it much easier.

Simple physics.
i spent like 350 dollars or so on my S&B filter, it is expensive but i was sold on the fact it is completely in cased and protected from outside debris like rocks, mud and leaves etc. so i figured if its completely covered my filter would last longer and need less cleaning and stuff
Thats a chunk of change! I spent $78 bucks on a dry-flow BHAF air filter. The open element CAI box I built from scrap 1/16th inch sheet aluminum I got for free. A 4" 45 degree PVC elbow for $3 bucks from Home Depot, a piece of automotive rubber weather stripping around the edges completed the build. It looks and works great! Inginuity on the cheap......works for me. Im a cheap bastard.
