Default '94 F350 7.3l (WAS)Dead In Driveway!

## It Started!## But why did I have this issue? (I left it running) Started at 11:55 on Friday 29 Feb 2008

! I do not beat this truck! No racing, drags or excessive off roading.I bought it from a cousin in Sept '07 and have had no mechanical issues until this issue.

Last night on my way home, 15 miles into 25 mile trip, about 40-45 degrees, clear weather, the engine cut off with no warning. (thank God I wasn't still pulling horses!) With the usual lights on and all systems failing, I coasted to the side of I-64 and shut everything down. I waited about a minute and she cranked right up and went home like nothing happened. I seem to recall a stutter in the engine earlier this week. Just a quick drop in the power during take off in 1st gear near the top of the rpm's before I shifted.

94 7.3l turbo manual dual tanks (at 6:15 am)
Turns over but won't start. It got down to 15 degrees last night so that may be an issue. Got in, turned to the glow position, waited for the light to go out, pushed in the clutch, turned the key. The engine turned over no problem but did not catch. NO smoke from exhaust. Stopped. Glowed again. Tried to start. Did not catch. Tried three times, waited 10 min. Tried three times again, same. Called work(going to be late). Called Carl and let him listen, had me apply gas pedal very slowly. Nothing. Switched tanks(R to F). Tried three times again. nothing. Waited by reading threads.

((((((( I got it started!)))))
Sounds realy rough and had a lot LESS exhaut smoke than normal.

Now at 12:10 the idle has smoothed out and the exhaust is emitting a steady thin blue plume. I shut it down and waited for the glow and she cranked right up!

Suggestions? Fuel pump, Bad fuel, Fuel Pump?

I CAN hear the fuel pump purr when the key is turned. I also hear what sounds like pressurized air?? A pump maybe?

Thanks in advance! Mav

pretty close the dodges have problems with their crank sensors, these 7.3's have a problem with the cam sensor, change it you shouldn't have any problems after that, they're really easy to change to

A guy I used to work with said a dt466 cam sensor will bolt right in place of a ford 7.3 sensor. He also said since it is a navistar sensor and not a ford sensor, will last the life of the engine. Just an fyi, I don't know how much truth there is to it.

Default Thanks For the Quick Resopnses

Cam Sensor- I looked up the cam sensor on partsamerica.com (they own Advance Auto, Kragen, Shucks, Checkers, and now Murrays. Great parts source for OEM)

I found: GP Sourensen = $93.98
Standard Motor Products= $44.98
Neihoff= $36.98
Why such a spread in $? Name Brand? They LOOK the same in the pics.

The cam sensor monitors when the lobe of the cam is passing the pick up, Right? If that is not picked up properly what happens? Does the spark firing get out of whack?

Thanks again and keep the Knowledge coming!

If the ECM dont get a good signal from the cam sensor it wont allow the motor to run..........I think on the Ford it wont open the injectors to allow fuel

I know a Stroke turns over a few times until all sensors give good readings then it will allow it to run

no spark to these motors, the cam sensor is on of many sensors that send ranges of info about how the truck is running to the ecm when the ecm stops geting a signal from the sensor it wont allow the truck to perform correctly because of the adjustments to fueling and timing the ecm makes

Go to the dealer. the cam sensor was recalled for a safety issue. like happened to you you could have been hurt or killed if the truck shut off and there was a bunch of traffic around you.
