Default 2 easy questions for the P/S men

My son just got a 97 P/S to drive as a company truck, when you start it cold or hot it lopes like a pullin truck untill you hold the throtle down a bit then it's fine, what could i look at first.

this truck is bone stock.

next the shifter on the colum is very loose, is this a worn out hole where the role pin goes through or something i can fix without buying a new shifter.

Thanks Dar

ill give you the answer to the shifter. its either a cable or the shifter linkage itself to the cable. if you take the panels off under the steering column and drop it down, you will see where the shifter tube connects to a pivot arm. 2 t20 torx screws connect the two. one or both will loosen up resulting in the slack your seeing. take one or both out and put som loctite on them. that'll take care of it. drop the column and youll immediately see what im talking about when you move it.

my buddies truck did the same thing with the lope, i put new injectors in it (needed 3 anyway), new wiring harnesses (needed those too ) and a bunch of other new parts that were bad with just about every sensor in the motor and it didnt fix it.

how many miles are on the truck? i was told this could be a possible HPOP (high pressure oil pump) issue on startup.

Thanks about the colum i will look tonight, the truck has 170???, i have heard about people changing all sorts of things and not fixing this, as a mater of fact my cousin is a ford diesel tech that spiecializes in 7.3-6.0-6.4 and he even said he has no idea what causes this and has seen it many times.

I personaly am a cummins guy but have no ill feelings towards a P/S, but unfortunitly i know nothing about them except this HPOP can cause all sorts of wierd stuff.

thanks Dar

yea i've also been told its just because of mileage...... how i have no idea my buddies truck did it all the way till the time he sold it, but it always ran. anytime it died was because of lack of maintenance

let me know what you find with the shifter

Get a video of it...

It should not romp alot unless started cold, or a few glow plugs are not working.

my 01 lopes when its cold and i dont plug it in, we had 1 injector go bad and thought that was it but it didn't fix it at all. it doesn't ever do it if i plug it in, or if its above 40 degrees. i just been living with it as i put 50,000 miles on it in 5 mths and it runs fine and gets good fuel milage.
