Default Hard Starting 97 PSD....

Got a question & can't find it anywhere.

Seems like the 97 powerstroke has a check valve of some kind somewhere that hold back oil to fire the injectors on start up & when this valve fails you will spin and spin till oil pressure builds up & then the PSD fires right up.

Well, I'm having a hard time starting after she sits overnight, she spins fine, but no sign of life, not even trying to fire...then after a few cycles of cranking (crank for 10 seconds, rest for 20) she catches and starts.

Could this be that valve???

No. You have a 97 which didn't have the anti-drainback valve in the HPOP...

You can still check to see if you have the same problem but a different cause. Next time it sits overnight or for a couple days, take the plug off the top of the HPOP Reservoir. Stick a toothpick or straw down in the hole and see where the level of oil is. It should be at least 1/2" from the top. If it is low. Refill it and try starting it. If it is full, that is not your problem and its time to start troubleshooting elsewhere.

Will have to check it tomorrow since it's about time to go to work.

The HPOP reservoir is the long rectangle box is it not, have never played with it.

As a sidebar, just realized I'm out of fuel filters...what vendor here is good to deal with and carries em??

Yes sir. It's the tall, rectangle right on the front of the engine. There should be a plug on top towards the drivers side of it. It's either a 1/4 square drive or an allen. Pull that and let us know where the level is after it sits.

As another side bar, the tach does not move when trying to start, just had a CPS installed via Ford recall a couple months ago.....after the truck sits at work for 8 hours she fires right up, no problems at all.

Tach should be moving...

Some more info on your truck and the issue might be helpful... How many miles on the truck, when did this start happening, does the WTS light come and go as normal, is there any smoke out the tailpipe when cranking...

You say it starts fine at the end of the day but just doesn't start in the morning after sitting overnight? What is the temperature difference where you are at?

HPO Res...

The red arrow on your truck will have a plug in there, mine has a oil pressure sender.

Wait to start light came on as normal and as I normally do wait about 10seconds or a little longer before starting.

She started right up this morning, noticed a little blue smoke (real light) the tach did not move at all when starting. It got cold and rained lastnight, don't know the temp range, but it was noticable. Prior to this it was warmer and not a big temp changes.

Its a late Oct. 97 build and only have about 87,800 miles if I remember right. She sits lots in the summer as I ride the motorcycle unless the weather stinks....has sat for 3 plus weeks and fired right up.

I would not worry about the tach not moving, if the CPS is dead, no start so you may have a weird PCM code that doesnt have the TACH moving when cranking. Might check the glow plug relay just for good measure, just a test light to make sure its working.

Well, it's cold and raining out...and the truck was a b**** to start, took me 4-5 times...waiting about 15 seconds after the wait to start light went out...turned over, but not even tried firing, was just the spinning...no bumping of it trying to start...like if you pulled all your spark plugs and tried starting a car...
