7.3L excessive black smoke cold start-up
Hey guys got a 1995 F-450 (wheel lift tow truck).. We just had issues with the fuel light coming on during hard acceleration, came to the conclusion that the meter valve that switches one gas tank to another was getting stuck ( truck only has one gas tank, one was removed). Since we bypassed that valve if you start this truck up cold it will smoke ALOT of black smoke for a few minutes that clear up..Injectors were replaced about a year ago, but i figure bad injectors would be white smoke...so any suggestions on where to start looking?? thanks

Alot of black smoke means alot of unburned fuel , your truck is more fuel than it can burn at one time at start up . Does it only do this during the first start up of the day or is it every start up . check the whole fuel system lines pumps filters ect , and the glow plugs could be weak and not getting hot enough and running for a longer period of time and the engine is starting on compression only with a little bit of heat from the glow plugs. Haynes makes a great Diesel repair Manual for strokers that will put you in the right direction for around 30 bucks . injectors could have a bad seal as well .
