I'll be very curious to see how this works out. I'd love to have a GV unit on my 1994 F350 4x4.

Been eyeballing that unit for my 5spd as well. Be sure to report on this if you get the time.

I'm not sure if you will reap the benefits you seek. I ran a G/V unit on a quarter mile trUck only because the truck ran out of gear near the end of the run. Other then that benefit, it was just fun to play with. Back then g/v were bulletproof, not so sure now. The up or down advantage is only 250 RPM at best so you need to equate that to the hassle of the installation.

You mentioned running 80+ MPH while heading to the river so I assume your towing something. Frankly, I can't imagine running that fast or that long towing anything especially on 35's.

But hey, that's just my opinion, your's may vary.

It's more like 400rpm. Mine's holding up fine, +3yrs/35k miles so far.

It is a percentage. For example: If you are driving 65 mph @ 2000 rpm and engage a 20% overdrive (I think that's the number), the final rpm is 83 1/3 % if initial rpm. In this example, that would be 1667 rpm.

I think that is my point..... In an optimum situation the engine should operate at peak efficiency., (follow the torque curve, if you will ) once that rpm is determined, the g/v unit may or may not put you there at highway speeds.

As I said earlier, just my opinion.

BTW, Nadirpoint, glad that yours is holding up well, I am curious as to how often you use it as opposed to how often you need it.

I think I drive it around 80% highway unloaded and it's engaged 5th over during that time. That puts me at 1800rpm with 4.10 gears, 5th over at 70mph with 34" tires. Perfect highway cruise setup.

Another big issue is where the GV puts you in any given gear, towing for example. That's where it really shines: 4th over (direct) for towing heavy. It's also really nice for those winding steep grades where a downshift kills you but popping the GV out keeps you up on the turbo without downshifting.

had a gv on my first diesel... '85 idi 6.9L f250. with a four speed BW t19 tranny, she could get 18mph with no turbo. I miss my gv, wish I had one on everything I own.
