Default 5spd Tranny Drain

Geez, tried to drain the tranny (ZF 5-spd) and the danged bottom plug won't come out. The bolt head is trying to strip. Tried an impact gun (battery powered) to no avail. So I figured before I broke out the pipe wrench and probably toast the plug I should buy a couple new ones from Ford. Well I'll be damned, first he says the plug and gasket is $49 cdn and then comes back with two weeks waiting, then says never mind.....they've been obsoleted. Guess it's off to the wrecking yards to find these items before removing the old plug. Going to run synthetic in there. Anyone doing this and what results if ya don't mind?

I realize I'll have to deal with that drain plug sooner or later, but is there any reason one of the cover plates on the side couldn't be removed to drain the tranny? Looks like a generous squeeze of silicone for a gasket there.
