Default Ran out of diesel and now it won't run.

On my way to get diesel I ran out. (So I think) it started chugging and I pulled over and killed it. Got some diesel inky and filled the bowl but it had diesel in the bowl. Started it and it ran for like 30 sec on 6 cylinders then died. Now it won't run at all. It will turn over spit and sputter but won't run. Checked my filter and there is a 1" layer of brown grit and my diesel turned brown. Clean it out the best I could on the side of the road but nothing. It does white smoke with a little hint of diesel in it. Any ideas. Of course it does this when I want to trade it in.

well if there wasn't any fuel in it then it's probably air logged. or since there was alot of junk in the bowl then it could be that the lines are just so full of crap that enough fuel won't flow thru them. but try this, if it is air logged, on the back of the heads down lower is a brass plug with a 1/4" drive square. just barely crack this to give the air somewhere to go. as soon as it even starts to fire then stop and tighten the plug back up.

Went out this morning and cleaned the bowl with some b12 and got a new filter and some Lucas to help get any junk in the lines out. Nothing now it's not even smoking. It acts like it fires on one like it stumbles on a cylinder. Things I've noticed is my fuel bowl doesn't fill up. I drained it and put my old filter on turned the key on two or three times and took out my filter and its still empty. My gpr smokes ? Im starting to wonder if i ran out of diesel or if it just died. I'm at a loss of what it could be and sorry for any misspellings I'm on an iPhone.

Yeah could be the lift pump Is so clogged up with crap and even the lines from the tank to the lift pump could be clogged from possibly suckin up junk in the tank ? Or the fuel bowl could be clogged where fuel is brought into it? Just a thought

no lift pump, just the mechanical pump in the valley. the fuel pump might have failed.

No it's a 96. I got it off the side of the road today so I'm gonna try to figure it out. I just don't know what to test for really

Ok. It's not refilling the bowl and my injectors are clicking really loud like they're dry firing. So do I need to start pulling the fuel system apart?

That's what I'm trying to get out I'm guessing. Below the bowl almost under the turbo. Just having a hard time getting the hoses off. Side note I did get one off and maybe 3 drops of diesel came out. Still sound like the pump?
