Default New Emission Laws

Hey all. I'm a cummins guy but ive always been a ford fan just waiting on them to come out with a great engine. Really hoping this new 6.7 is that great engine I've been waiting for. I own a 12 valve cummins, so I'm not too familiar with these new diesel emission stuff and what the laws are. Everything I see for a dpf urea delete and or some programmers say "off road use only". Obviously these companies wouldn't be very wealthy if everyone that buys their product never use public roads. Anotherwords not too many people are gonna buy a brand new 70k dollar truck and use it for mudding or pulling a sled only. So what is the law on these and how much are they enforcing them? Is this an annual E-check type of thing or is DOT gonna be out pulling over every new diesel pickup checking for exhuast modifications. Anyone know what the penalties are for deleting emission crap.

Couple more questions:

Is the new 6.7 offer a 6 speed manual trans?

And any word of Efi coming out with a program for these new engines?

Don't know anything about the emissions stuff...

They do not offer a manual for the 6.7... Nobody buys em so why offer em. Auto's have come a long way.

Yeah your right autos have came a long way. But I still prefer 6 speed. How does the ford automatic compare to the allisons?

theres quite a bit of shift lag when wot chevys wot shifts instantly. gas or diesel. Ford gas 6spd man mode forget it... bounces off revlimiter then shifts.

want the emissions bs to go away, get rid of al gore and california.

You asked, here it is,TOTAL OVER KILL and all we have to show for it is issues, the engines ARE NOT THE ISSUE,its the junk the EPA is forcing the MFG'S to hang on the enginesin the name of going GREEN ,think, egr's,egr coolers, dpf's,regens, ect, never had all the issues up to the mid year 2003 when ford for an example had to drop the 7.3 for the 6.0 and the rest is history, here is the chart, the 80% reduction in 2002 was not good enough for the GREN'S in the EPA/GOVERMENT, DTS Articles - Diesel Emissions Reduction ,copy and paste this link to see an example ofout of control goverment reg's .

Ok, so, like others here I'm a Cummins guy. But I sold my '02 and now I'm looking for a new truck. I have compared the 3500 Laramie to the F350 Lariat a couple times now but I can't get a dealer to let me take the F350 for a day of driving to see how it actually is with me behind the wheel. It would seem the 6.7L fixes a lot of concerns but is it truly reliable? I've seen the new 6.7L Cummins in action and there doesn't appear to be any issue with regens or other such stuff but I'm not convinced by Ford yet and I need help.

to answer you question on the emissions, no DOT is NOT going to be pulling everyone over. on the new 6.7, you have an EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculator), SCR (Selective Catalyst Reduction), and DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter). when an aftermarket advertises an exhaust system or any other products as "off road", they do this for liability, because technically, if you get sent through inspection and they find your emissions components in the exhaust or truck are missing, it's considered a Federal Offense and has a hefty fine. usually if you buy one of these "off road" products, you have to sign a waiver that dismisses the company that sold and produces the product from being responsible in any way for what fines you might recieve. basically use at your own risk. so really they're not just for off roading or mudding or whatever you were thinking of, in order to sell the stuff legally the vendor has to classify it as "off road", just about all of it can be used for highway or towing or whatever you want.

so living in California, it would be pointless to take all of this stuff off the truck because their emissions laws are so strict, and they constantly check. but if you live in Kentucky or Ohio where they dont test, your in good shape. but if you delete all the emissions components, buy a tuner that will fool the PCM to thinking that it is still there, so you dont get a check engine light and that the truck will run like it should.

the E-Check all depends on what state your in, I myself am an emissions inspector the the state of Connecticut. the only reason we plug the diesels in through the OBDII port is to get an RPM reading, otherwise it's run on the dyno at 30mph and we get a particulate reading out the exhaust pipe via exhaust probe. So in other words, having a check engine light on WILL NOT fail you for the test. Now 2011's are not being tested yet, they're only up to 08/09's now, and so far the test hasnt changed.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

and again, the penalties vary by state. usually if you fail, they usually give you 30 or 60 days to come back and get re-tested for free (thats if you fail the first time, after the second, you pay again). but if you eventually get sent to inspection (because the test center reported you, or you got pulled over for "too loud" of an exhaust and they send you) and you dont have that stuff on there, your getting fined out the a$$.

for tuning, your talking about EFI live? im not really sure they have a program out for it yet, but H&S Performance have a great tuner for the 6.7, along with a couple others. capable of 250 extra horsepower with the right mods.

and the 6 speed automatic they use now is called the Torcshift. Compared to the Allison 1000, I'd say they're just about equal, ford's come a long way from the bastard child E4OD. But like everyone's said, ford transmissions characteristically have soft, car-like shifts which is their downfall. lots of time inbetween shifts, unlike the allison's which are sharp, decisive shifts.

you know why autoes are not offered! smog laws. i live in the hills and tow huge loads up and down very steep roads and autoes just melt with that kind of use. i will stick to the older trucks that have low gears and 6 speed. Try going down a mountain that is 4 miles long and drops 3000 feet with hair pin turnes every 100 yards towing a 24000lb trailer your brakes catch fire.

they no longer offer manuals.... your only option is the 6 speed auto torcshift. and having an auto produces less emissions than a manual.

Well, I guess that's one more reason why my Cummins has a handshaker! And why, if you really want a manual tranny, you'll have to get a Cummins (G56).

"My Carbon Footprint is bigger than yours'!!!"

I test drove the new 6.7 Scorpion when it first came out, and again after the GM-punishing PCM reflash. It was pretty ballsy, I guess. But it's hard to drive a 6-speed manual with almost 1000 ft/lbs and be excited about an auto with 800 ft/lbs. First I drove the Ford with the salesman, then the salesman and I took my truck out for a spin. He just snickered, and agreed it wasn't easy to be impressed with something less powerful, even if it was brand new. However, I must say that I loved that Ford and its' awesome list of comforty options, right up until I popped the hood open. Have you guys looked into the engine bay of this thing? What a freakin' mess!!! How am I supposed to bomb THAT?
