Default practice What You Preach

I finnaly decided to practice what I preach, you know I am on here alot trying to help anyone that needs it. I have been out of work since June and layed up from a broken leg and seperated ankle from July to November, it still bothers me, and I haven't really taken the time to check out everything on my truck like I have been telling everyone else to do. Since I am not driving it every day for work I decided to pull her in the garage for an extended stay for some tender lovin. I was going to just pull my injectors on passenger side to inspect them for a little issue I ran into on the drivers side. After thinking about it I decided that I would take this opertunity to go ahead and change out my early 04 intake for the later style since it was just sitting around. I also decided to go ahead and pull my oil cooler to check out the condition of it too since it has 254k on it, Surprise Surprise, it was so clogged I gouldn't get enough air through it to move a feather using the air compressor. So it looks like My spare one is going in place of the clogged one, no I don't have a coolant filter either but that is on order as of this afternoon. I am also going to install my custom EGR delete since I have just been relying on the unplugged EGR valve,it been that way since 50k, I cut up a square cooler and it is now only 3" long and the exhaust side of the cooler is 1" long to just block off the exhaust side, you can see the pics of them in my album. I am not messing with my HPOP since it has not given me any problem and I don't have the coin for a billet one right now/the only kind I replace it with/ but I am playing with the ideah of changing my oil rails to the later style with the ICP in the valve cover since I have all the parts to do that, the only thing that could nix that is if I don't have the bosses in there for the top mounts of the oil rail.
I have always trusted my truck to get me wherever I wanted to go and I have kind of taken it for granted that every thing was good to go. I hate telling people that they should buy this or that for there truck because I know they work hard for their money and I don't want to tell them how to spend it, but I will tell this from now on, "if you have a 6.0 and don't have a coolant filter on it you are a damm fool" $150 that WILL save you $1000 is a no brainer.
I am going to clean my turbo, never been done, I am going to change my coolant, never been done, I am going to pull my IPR and check it out, never been done, going to change all my hoses, never been done, and anything I can think of that might need attention. If I had the money I would be pulling the motor and doing head studs and new gaskets,I haven't lost an ounce of coolant since the truck was new so I think I will wait till I have an issue.
I just hope that someone will read this and realize that they can't take their truck for granted and to do some of the maintinace that needs to be done time to time and to put a coolant filter the truck before it costs them alot of money down the road or they get stranded . I recently did head gaskets and studs on my sister's truck and I was thinking they didn't take good care of it to let it get that bad,I have come to realize that the oil cooler can rupture on anyone's truck, Mine had to be close, And all that could be avoided with a simple thing like a coolant filter, my truck won't leave the garage until one is on there. I hope I have been able to help some of you in the past and I hope this long winded writeup helps someone in the future.
Thanks for reading: Bob Ford

I tallked to a mechanic a couple of months ago and I got the impression that if you were going to change part of the oiling system, you needed to change it all (HPOP to rails). The two systems move the oil differently and this is why you can't simply drop an 05 HPOP into an 03/04. It can be done, but its pretty extensive. In short, I'd monkey with this part last if I were you. That way, if you get all frustrated, everything else is done.

Overall, it was a good read.

Coolant filter sounds like a great idea, it seems like everybody neglects coolant, I think on any vehicle the coolant should be changed every couple years at the least.

Karl, I am not going to go with the 05 up pump, that would involve pulling motor -or trans to take the adapter plate off to change the branch tube, it goes into the back of the block and is sandwiched between block and adapter plate so I will save that idea for whenever the motor comes out. I have an older 04 motor that has the newer style oil rails but used the older style pump, I believe it is the same branch tube and the big difference is the uppipes, mine actually screw into the rockerbox up top to hold them in place because of the flex line that goes to the LOG style oil rail. I am going to pull the HPOP cover to replace all the seals anyway so I will be able to check the branch tube to make sure they are the same, I believe they are, I will chech heights to make sure as well. What I am going after is to get the ICP where I can get to it so If I ever have to do a high presure air check on the system it will be alot easier, plus it will be a whole lot easier to change the ICP. All this planning might not work out anyway, it all comes down to the rocker boxes having the bolt bosses for the newer/late 04/ style oil rails, If they don't then It will all have to wait till motor comes out in future to use the newer rocker boxes I have. Thanks again for reading.

Bob, really looking forward to the pics/descriptions of the differences in oiling systems and what works with some and not with others. I may have a spare set of rocker boxes that will work for you once you figure out what you need.

Thanks Mike, I have the later 04 rocker boxes and the whole setup. If I had the money right now I would just go ahead and pull the motor and do the studs and HGs and update the HPOP to the new system.

You cannot put the later style oil rail on if you originally had the log rail/ found this out last night/ because the old rocker boxes do not have the bolt bosses for the upper part of the rail. Now if you change out the rocker boxes you can put the new style on and leave the original pump and branch tube and just use the new standpipes. If you want to use the new-style pump you either have to pull motor or pull trans and take off the adapter plate on back to change out the branch tube.
Mike, check out my photos, that is the 3rd injector that this happened to, this was on pass side/photos on left/ the photos on right were from drivers side I fixed the other week, cleared it up alot but still not right, that is why I pulled all the pass side, when this happens it rocks like a big-block on start up and will eventually become a miss.
