Default 04 6.0 with problems

Any help on this would be great. I wasn't the one driving at the time it happened, so this is second hand. My father-in-law has a stock 2004 6.0 except he is running edge evolution. Only drives it a few miles a day, pulls his fifth wheel camper a few times in the summer. That's about it. Brother-in-law was driving it in to town. Didnt get a half mile down the road and said its started hesitating real bad and puking black smoke like it was its job. Sounded like what happened not too long ago when the throttle sensor went bad and was replaced, but that was only 2 years ago.

Limped back to the farm, popped the hood, and oil was flowing heavy out of the back of the turbo. Father in law is on vacation right now, so some of us are going to dive in to it tomorrow morning. We will hook up to it to see what codes are showing. I wanted to know what all we should be checking for/possible causes.

Thanks alot guys.

By flowing out of the back of the turbo u mean from the exhaust? Could be a bad turbo seal.

Well see...this is where I apologize. Like I said, this is second hand. The exhaust is what i figured he was meaning, but until I get there to see it myself tomorrow im using his words. I'm hoping its just a turbo seal, although I'm not sure of all the components that would be affected by this problem.

Would the bad seal cause the severe hesitation?

If its dumping oil as bad as u make it sound and its going through the pipe into the motor gettin on sensors and other things i would say it would cause it to run very bad and smoke like crazy. It would be most likely a blue smoke also from the oil burning.

Thanks a lot...my fatherinlaw said last week that he had a little blue smoke. I'm assuming it may have been the beginning of the problem that has resulted.

Thanks again

FWIW, if you do end up needing a new turbo, if you're looking for cheap, you can just get a used 05-07 turbo on one of the forums for ~$250 usually. If you want new, get a new powermax, they're like $1200 shipped to your door now, so even cheaper than stock, a little more whistle and they'll move a little more air, but still spool like stock.
