do u have to drop the transmission to install it or is it a quick install?

Nope, just unbolt the pan off the bottom, then undo the valve body, then all the solenoids are right there, really easy to do. If you drain the fluid into a CLEAN bucket, you can just re-use it too. Great investment for the money.

go buy an 08 pan and filter, about a case of LV or SP fluid, and the tp looking filter up front and you can kill two birds with one stone. The solenoids are right there when you drop the pan, there is an electrical connector on the passenger side that MUST be disconnected (10mm?) to drop valve body.

what kind of difference does it make having a filter and pan from an 08

The 08 pan really isn't much different, just shaped different to hold the newer style filter. The 08 setup is a true filter and it's much bigger than the one found in the 03-07 trans. It's one of those preventative things.
