Default 6.0 what to do

I bought a f 350 with the 6.0 having had a 7.3 forever I never questioned this purchase , It had 97000 when i bought it and I put 20000 on it in months , for my job I drive alot and we are allways towing a small trailer or hauling paint, so my question is do I rebuild the hole top end which is what mt mechanic says is needed and if so will this give me the long life that I was looking for when I bought this thing and if so what are the best parts . I drive about 50-60000 a year . thanks

no offense, but i think your mechanic might be coaxing you into this because its a VERY high $$$$$ job. besides head gaskets, egr cooler, turbo, and injector issues, the parts on these motors dont wear out very often.

x2 with 03powerstroke, a bulletproof diesel kit is one of the best (if not the best) you can get.

mkmcustoms.com has some good stuff as well.

Sounds like you're getting taken for a ride here. I'm sure some work is needed, but it could be much simpler than your mechanic is making it out to be. He sounds like the typical gas guy who has heard horror stories about the 6.0 and thinks he has to throw parts at it to fix it.

Test, Verify, Repair. If only these tech's could follow these simple rules...

We can't help you much without knowing more about your truck... we have no clue what is wrong with it. Any more info you can give us about the truck would be beneficial. Other than that all we can do is tell you what is normally done to bulletproof them.

the usual work performed on these trucks are head studs, gaskets, egr cooler upgrade or delete, oil cooler, and a little reconditioning inside the turbo exhaust housing.

a bad egr cooler or possible head gasket would be the cause of your coolant dissapearing, egr cooler is the norm.

unless you've been having a hard time getting the truck to start or it's been running with a skip or rough, your injectors are probably fine. if your mechanic has the right scantool, he can test them without even opening the hood.

When I was loosing coolant and had no obvious leaks, it was coming from the hose on the EGR cooler! In the winter it was really bad, but not in the summer. I solved that by deleting that cooler, that was way worth the effort.

When my #8 injector stuck open, whoa! What a mess that was! You would KNOW if all 8 injectors were taking a dump. Seems odd all eight would go at once.

My truck had a bad turbo when I bought it (thanks again for the fine pre-sale check up Jones West Ford in Reno), that was an obvious one too, NO power when it was above about 80 degrees outside and the truck was at operating temp.

I completely agree that this may be a fish story and it may not be as bad as it sounds. What codes has it popped? How did it drive that made you take it to a mechanic? These trucks are better built than what they are given credit for, not perfect, but not the money pit the uneducated haters make them out to be either.

A "hit test" verified my #8 injector was done.
