Default 6.0 Upgradeand Preventive measures Info!

First off my truck is a 2006 F250 98,000 miles. Currently installed are the banks ram air, banks dual monster exhaust and the banks six gun programmer, Sinister coolant filter kit. Basically looking for info and reviews of anyone who has the banks, I have it and I like it. It has alot of engine and transmission safety features I like. ( unless its all bs ) but i dont think it is. But of course thats all the "fun" stuff, I am looking for info on the egr and oil cooler and head studs. I have read many of these forums and im considering trying it myself. After all nothing better than the satisfaction of doing your own work but so many OPTIONS! One I have been reading about is the Sinister and the GoGo egr deletes. Anyone running these and have info on them? Head studs well thats prolly a professionals job so I wont need alot of info on those but if anyone knows of a diesel shop around the Pittsburgh area that is good with the 6.0s that would be great.

Dont take it personal-I am not a fan of the banks chip ive seen them fry PCMs and FICMs due to a fault within the system because they run a jumper harness from the PCM to the chip and from the chip to the FICM there is the potential and i have seen it on more than one occasion where it will throw codes P0611-FICM performance and injector circuit low codes yadda yadda signs of failed ficm. Along with other 600 series codes related directly to the PCM.

If it was a once in a blue moon thing i wouldnt condemn the system. But beings i had a friends truck that i did the head stud and egr delete kit in back a year an a half ago along with installing my own custom made ficm heat shield, he installed banks chip etc. and followed me up to my current dealership where after having it in the truck 2 weeks fried a PCM. Installed it put everything back to stock and he fried it again. Got off with faulty damaged component from factory, put a FICM in it at the same time as well due to many communication codes and injector codes.

Head studs are great a fun job very easy to me. Cab comes off everything is wide open. within 1-2 hours i can have the cab off and engine in short block form. ARP with ford gaskets. Make sure the heads are milled and inspected thoroughly for cracks.

EGR delete if you can do it in your state, If not bullet proof diesels EGR cooler.

Swamps FICM get the 58v think of a FICM as a distributor for a diesel, without the camshaft signal it would not be able to know when to fire the injectors, along with crank signal. Just like a distributor needing a cam and crank to work. Also like a distributor the higher the voltage the better, why? It has to overcome the resistance in the circuit to each injector which is why they mounted the FICM over top the drivers side valve cover.

When you do the FICM protect it! i can give you detailed instructions on how to make your own FICM heat shield and you will be needing the 03 style FICM mounting bracket its a solid piece of aluminum vs 2 flimsy brackets.

OIL CHANGES i can NOT stress 3 thousand mile intervals at the least on these engines. Do not use aftermarket oil filters or caps. They will cause ALL kinds of problems! messes with oil pressure and thats what the injectors fire off of. Plus it prolongs the life of the injectors. Ford has a 5w40 full synthetic diesel oil, run that and with proper oil changes and FL2016 filters and stock cap should not have any injector issues.

The other thing to pay attention to is your Fuel filters! Clean fuel and proper pressure ensures injector longevity. Upgrading the Fuel pressure regulator with the Ford NOT international kit will help tremendously along with the 6.4 banjo bolts and washers.

Best of luck to ya!

I agree with everything he said.

Do the studs, get an EGR delete (GoGo like you suggested has a few really nice options, but they are $$$, I use an RCD delete myself, they can be had for under $200 on ebay). Get rid of that banks programmer, it doesn't save anything on your trans. Get a custom tuned SCT, it's the ONLY way to go on a 6.0.

Default Drop the Banks

I have to agree with Mdub, the Banks 6 gun with "Power PDA" I have on my truck has caused nothing but problems, which was installed when I bought the truck, and include the infamous hard start/ no start issue. Since the last time in the shop, which required new gaskets and studs, I have not had it hooked up and haven't had a problem with it since, knock on wood. I plan on getting the SCT and doing the egr delete as soon as I get back from Iraq.

Thanks for all the help guys and I will look into the SCT tuner but right now I may have a new problem! Truck just started today as I was leaving work, at idle it is blowing white smoke, Looks like there could be fluid in the tips are to tell tho with the rain here. Has a green tint kinda but could be from the soot already in the exhaust very hard to tell with the rain.Once in gear smoke goes away. Doesnt come back unless truck is shut off and sits for an hour or so. Any ideas? Egr?

Definitely white smoke? Next time it's smoking go back there and smell it. See if it's sweet like coolant or burns your eyes like fuel... that will tell us which direction to go.

PowerstrokeTech87 -

What are the differences between the Ford and the International fuel pressure regulator kits?

The International kit doesn't come with the front cover piece.

You can order JUST the spring from Ford too, instead of the whole kit. I have the P/N at work if anyone needs it.

JM5687, sounds like you have an injector issue possibly. How does the truck start up? Is it a rough start? What's the idle like? Stumbling or smooth?
