towing with 06 6.0

i pull about 8,000 lbs with my 2006 6.0. my transmission sometimse gets up to 190 degrees
( when i pull a long hill, or slow down through town). it usally stays around 170 as long as i keep speed and don't push it to hard. i have a edge evoultion. i am wondering if i should put a torque converter in or do any upgrades to the trans? i don't think temps around 180 will hurt anything for short ttime periods. :humm:

Yeah, those temps are completey fine. The thermostat in the trans doesn't even open up until 180*. Why do you think you need a torque converter? The stock converters in these are pretty hefty. They're a triple disk converter factory. I'd say if anything, get an SCT with custom tunes, they will make your tranny very happy.

how hot is to hot? when it starts getting damage done. i someimes get in to rough spots and have to push it hard. (4x4) how much power will the stock heads ans studs hold?

yeah, i have been wondering this myself.... i get my egt's up to 1400 for a few sec. while i am seeing how i stack up with other diesel guys.. :yeah:

What mods do you have? Is this truck stock? You probably CAN'T get it too hot running stock... If you're referring to the trans, it's hard to say, there isn't a set temp where everything all of a sudden melts. Obviously, less heat is better. Once you start getting past 225 temps, I'd start slowing down quite a bit. My guess is you will never see this, the 5R110 is a great trans and runs pretty cool. Do you have a trans temp gauge or are you going off the factory piece?

EGT's are a different story. You can do quick bursts up to whatever, but for extended periods such as towing up a hill or anything like that, most say not to go over 1250 for long periods. Think about it like an oven. You preheat the oven to 450 to cook something. You can stick you hand in quick and pull it out and not be burnt, but if you leave it in there for 60 seconds, it will probalby burn pretty good. I try not to go over 1100 myself (pretty conservative) when towing. When racing, I've buried my 1600* gauge a few times. If you're drag racing or sled pulling, you might as well put a piece of tape over the pyro.

my egt's normally stay below 1100. sometimes get a litle over 1200 when pulling out on a hill. it hardly ever gets above 1100 even pulling my 8000 lbs trailer. i have trouble keeping the probe in the header. have had to put it back in 3 times.

i have a edge evoultion, aem air intake and a flowmaster exhaust. i don't baby the truck, but i don't push it to its breaking point. i watch the temps and try to keep things cool.

What levels are you running on the Edge. Your trans will thank you if you switch over to an SCT with custom tunes. Is your exhaust a full turbo back?

Why is your EGT probe blowing out... sum ting wong...

I strongly suggest you look at some custom tow tunes from someone like Eric @ Innovative. Your truck will run better, tow better, and the trans will shift much better.:c:

i usually run level 3. afraid to run 4. (only has 4 level) its a cat back. only reason i have he edge is i won it in a contest. don't know why the prob comes out.( not getting it tight or what i donno) how much is the sct?

I love my SCT tuner... esp for the trans. I can modify it to shift how i want and it does help with the feel of it esp. while towing. almost limitless ability depending on how good the guy is writing the program for you for how well you want it to preform/run. I never regreted getting mine. I picked up mine with a EGT module as well... just need to install it one of these days.

The probe should be an NPT fitting. Are you just not getting it tight enough? I wonder what would cause it to loosen up like that.

You could probably sell the Edge on ebay or craigslist, and get enough to jump into a used SCT. For our trucks an X-cal2 would work. It's the older design than the current X-cal 3, but is perfectly fine for a 6.0. (X-3 has a couple more features, but not really needed, I still use an X-2).

Brand new you can get one for about $425 with 3 free custom tunes, extreme tunes are $80 upgrade. Or find one used for the $150-$200 price range, get the tunes separate. They vary from vendor to vendor but for a good tune expect to pay between $40 and $65. I know Innovative is $65 each, or $165 for 3 I believe.
