hi im new to this diesel stuff never owned one until this last week. so i dont know much but here is what happend to my truck. i was driving from minneapolis mn to dayton ohio and the truck was runing fine until i stoped to get some fuel at loves truck stop at gary indiana of hwy 65. as soon as i was finished fueling and started the truck my truck check engine light went on and my truck after 5-10 min started losing power and the turbo gauge started not going up and stayed at 0. so i parked the truck at same gas station over night and next morning started the truck and it had alot of white smoke and when i give gas i truck is chocking feels like to much fuel or air so i changed the fuel filters and its the same thing i ran diognastics and it gave me a code p0404 and second one p0404 pd and truck starts fine but wont drive more then 5mph. can anyone help me with this? thanks truck is 2006 ford f350 turbo diesel rwd 138xxx miles will put pics later
pretty sure that is an EGR code, sounds like the egr valve is stuck open, the valve is located right to the left of the intake elbow, has a connector on top of it, it is a round cylinder with 2 small bolts holding it in place, when removing it be careful and gently pry it up side to side, it will be tough because it will be coated with crud, clean it good with some brake clean, try to get most of the junk out of the intake as well, any more questions just post them, but this is most likely the trouble you are having.. hey thanks alot for your help. i did what you told me and it worked the funny thing about it is the shop at loves truck stop couldn't figure it out and i fixed it my self with your help. thanks i think i just put bad diesel in the truck but its runing fine now
I pulled my ERG. A little tough to get it to break loose and come straight out. No place to grab it. Used a mini pry bar after I got it to twist a little (1/4 inch) with one of those rubber strap oil filter removers.
Above, someone mentioned to clean out the intake too. Do you mean I should spray carb cleaner down in the hole and knock that stuff loose? Where will it go?
I cleared the 404 and it seems to be holding. Thanks for the help (and saving me the $230 for the replacement part).
