Default looking at buying a 6.0l need help

Well i need some advice im looking for a diesel truck and im looking at a 2003 6.0 its extended cab with exhaust and k&n intake for power mods and its got good wheels and tires but its got 145000 for mileage i had a 7.3l and it was bullet proof buuuut in a recent snow storm a dumb Bi@#$ hit me and totaled it this guy is asking 13,000 for the truck.

i know that it will need the new oil cooler ad possibly a tranny rebuild down the road would it be worth it because im looking for something that i can get some serious miles out of not just a money pit.

heres the story let the opinions fly!

Try this first. Its free and may take a week or so to get it. It is done on the mechanics time. Get the report first then go from there.

I'd buy it. Price is fair, but not great. Trans in these aren't like a 7.3, I wouldn't even worry about a rebuild unless you know there is something wrong with it already. Goose on here has something like 245k on his stock trans. They hold up really well.

Make sure it's not puking coolant. It'd be best to monitor it on a test drive, check the coolant temp vs oil temp. Check the usual truck stuff.

But you bought one? Your sig says 03 6.0? Sounds like another frustrated 6.0 owner.

The biggest difference between happy 6.0 owners and angry ones is the level of competence and integrity of their mechanic.

Any vehicle you buy will eventually have some sort of a mechanical failure. HPOP, though not really common at that low of a mileage isn't unheard of. You got it with 70k on it roughly then? So do you know how it was maintained before you?

I already answered your recent posts. Probably an EGR cooler. It's not like this info isn't abundant about headgasket/egr cooler failures. You can fix that yourself in a weekend with less than $10 if you want to.

I have an 03 f 550 with the 6.0 and i have roughly 165000, it has a IMT dominator service body ,crane, welder etc... This truck is heavy and it runs pretty good. I have had a few issues but nothing major. It is bone stock except for the egr cooler. I wouldent be afraid of buying another one. My advise would be take fluid samples and go from there. Good luck

You forgot one important thing, How much they wan't to spend repairing it. Many people buy a diesel for longetivity because they don't want to spend mega bucks MAKING it reliable. I'm not knockin 6.0's if thats your thing good for you, from what I understand they make great power, not that I know much about them but I do know enough that I personally wouldn't buy one.

Repairs on a diesel are expensive no matter what brand you're dealing with. Made worse if you're paying someone else to do it. This is an expensive hobby. Almost everyone I know with a STOCK 6.0, has little to no issues. The guys having problems are the ones throwing junk programmers on and thrashing the truck.

The high cost of repairs is made even worse by incompetent mechanics, who throw parts at a problem they can't properly diagnose. This is where repairs become insanely expensive on a 6.0.

I agree with what you're sayin, but I'll still chose to steer clear of buyin a 6.0
