And We Have Lift Off
1 down and 1 to go... Left bank head is off while engine still in the truck. Was gonna use a hoist to pull the head out but did not have enough room in the shop to properly position hoist. Yeah I should back the truck up 6 or 8 feet and it would have been golden. Hell no, that's too difficult so I pulled the head out by hand. I start physical therapy tomorrow for injuries sustained in doing so. Actually no injuries, but I would not recommend this to anyone. The fun now starts on the right bank. Man this is not going to be fun at all. I'm still flippin coins on whether to pull heater box, or jack engine, loosen tranny from crossmember and rotate motor to the left. If I choose to jack and rotate motor, I see now I'll have to pull the fan and shroud out of the way. More to come...

Hours: too many, but that's ok. I got a Honda Civic, plus a Harley to ride. Taking my time and it will be right
Tune: Eric, Innovative, Extreme Street: I may need to talk to Eric, but I'm not certain it's the tune that caused it. Apparently you're referring to the pistons.
Info you: Turbo boost has registered as high as 34 psi. and i've seen the egt get 1350, for a few seconds. Generally that's due to someone that has me "spring loaded and cocked to the pissed of position".
Did you see the slime in the #11 Pic. Got to be oil cooler or egr cooler.

Not sure where that pic of the slime is, it's zoomed in pretty far, where is that located?
Happy turkey day guys!

The slime I believe is coolant that mixed in the rocker box with oil. It seeped down of course around the rocker arms and valve springs. When I pulled the valve cover off both sides, the valve covers were coated with the slime. Has to be coolant mix. I did not see any when I trained the oil pan, but that was before I found this. Logic suggests egr or oil cooler failure. Oh yeah, the egr valve was frozen when I popped it off (that term is used lightly). No problem as I've already capped the egr valve hole off and of course going with the complete egr cooler delete. New oil cooler already installed.

Goose350: Actual hours devoted to this mission is really hard to say. I'm retired so I work on it when I feel like it. Trust me, this is not a simple two-three day job. If I ever did it again, I would certainly know all the little secrets and tricks to trimming the time off the task. I have transportation other then the truck, so I want to take my time and do it right. Frankly I'm learning as I go along as this is my first deep dive into a diesel engine. If you get past all the junk on top of the engine, it is pretty much like any other conventional engine. This just has more junk on it. Well that's not fair: I'm certain each part has a purpose and a place. Some in a trash can...

Ok folks, I've got the right bank ready to come out. I've looked at pulling the heater box out and that looks like a cluster f___. I've been toying with a comment about jacking the motor and tranny up and twist the motor around high enough on the right side to clear the heater box. Has anyone done this and succeeded? If so, did you drop the crossmember, the drive shaft, and what about the transfer case? Last but not least, did you remove the motor mounts both sides completely?
