The 6.0 isn't supposed to idle for a long time. It will do what is called "wet-stacking" Basically the engine can't build enough heat without a load on it to properly burn all of the fuel entering the cylinders. It just washes the cylinder walls with diesel more or less. I'd suggest doing the high-idle mod if you have the factory upfitter switches. I added the switches to my truck specifically for this reason. It will idle at 1200 rpms and lock the torque converter to give it a little bit of a load.

sounds exactly right.. Thanks!!

Are you referring to the bank of switches on the dash from the factory? What all is required for this mod?

Yes I am, just google it, it's all over the net. You basically connect one of the power wires from aux3 or aux 4 to the PTO wire. The wire from the aux switch terminates right above the e-brake pedal, as does the bundle of wires that contains the PTO stuff. You will find it, just google 6.0 powerstroke high idle or something along those lines.

ok i have a question about this high idle mod .. i have a 03 the only mods i have is egr delete k&n air and straight exhuast ... this is my first diesel so i dont no a whole lot .. i was wondering if it was normal for my truck to idle at about 1200 just when its cold out around 30 degrees and only on cold start. when i tap the throttle it idles down.. is it possible that the mod has already been done?? ... what i want to no is if this is normal and if not what should i do about it..

As long as your truck has a newer flash, it will have it's own built in high idle, but it will usually only go up to 900-1000 rpm's, sometimes a touch higher when it's really cold out. It doesn't lock the torque converter up though, and it does it on it's own. With this mod, you can control it with the switch. You have to be in Park, have the e-brake on, and then flip the switch and in a couple seconds it will idle right up. Then if you touch the brake or throttle it shuts off. It will rev back up as long as it's in park, ebrake set and switch up when you take your foot off.

There is 2 ways to wire it up too, one way just locks it at 1200, the other way actually will go anywhere from 1200-2400 I believe, it's based on how much charge the batteries would need I believe. I didn't want to have my truck idling at 2400 rpms no matter what so I just went with the solid 1200rpm setup.
