Was it pouring black smoke up until it took off? Your turbo vanes may be sticking... not a huge deal, they can usually be cleaned in an afternoon with some elbow grease and a little time.

Black smoke should clear when turbo kicks in, not smoke more, that is exactly opposite of how a turbo charged diesel works, especially true on a truck like ours. If it was a mechanically injected diesel, where more fuel is poured harder and heavier at higher RPM's, and they're seriously over-fueled, then maybe. On our trucks, the turbo should clean that smoke right up no issue. You should ESPECIALLY have no problems cleaning smoke from an Edge on a lower level (is that a low level? What do they go up to?). Your truck has 102k miles or 102? How is the truck used? You tow with it a lot, or just get the kids from school? These need to be RUN.

Here's the turbo cleaning process. At that many miles, you really couldn't hurt anything to do this no matter what.

Sounds like the Vanes to me also. Had my truck doing the same thing last month. Took ti to Ford and the found the Vanes were stuck. They cleaned it since it was still under the 100k warranty. But I ahd no smoke whats so ever from my truck..
