Default Where the h3LL is that ticking coming from?

Was on my way home from work this morning and heard and odd ticking sound outside the passenger window. This agrivating noise followed me all the way to the house. So, I thought that I may have a U-joint going out. The noise only happens when I am moving 10mph or better and increases frequency along with the speed.

By the time I got to the house I was alittle P.O.ed so, I just went to bed. This afternoon when I woke up i went out to check out the truck. I noticed that there were some rub marks on the the front passenger axle and some kind of odd plate thing that would move from the Y all the way back to the housing. Looks like some kind of dust cover for the axle housing, but I am not shure. It is actually like that on both front axle shafts, so now I am really confused.

Could not really find a culprit so I went back in to get ready for work. On my way to work the stupid ticking was still continuing to follow me and at times seemed to be getting louder. Then I stopped to pickup supper for tonight at Wendy's and when I came back and got back in the truck the ticking had stopped. OK so now I am really scratching my head. Is it gone? Is it fixed? Is it just about to blow up????

After about ten miles or so I pulled into work and was riding beside the guard rail fence and could here the faint sound of maybe a grind or sliding of metal aginst it self. Oh, yeah I checked and I wasn't rubbing the guard rail.

I am totally stumped Does anyone have any ideas or possible causes.

It does not sound like something serious but the rub marks may be a good indicator that somethins playin around down there. More importantly like you said could be u-joints, but their is some internal components tween the rotor and the wheel bearing gotta make sure its not that. when you have time and if this continues to be an annoyance then you need to get that rig up on jackstands, or if you have access to a shop with a lift then do that...might be a bit safer, either way get those tires of the ground get someone to idle her up while another investigates and attempts to pinpoint the noise, maybe someones got a mechanics stethoscope layin around if that noise sounds internal. you probably would have felt that wheel bearing rolling down the road but it can be missed, when that rigs in the air grab the tire by the 12, and 6 o'clock position and see how much play or wobble shes got, I doubt its that but a simple routine that'll save you bein dead on the side of the road. I'm thinkin something to do with brakes, the backing plates can come loose off the brake pads and can make noise, or if you have wear tabs on your pads it could have gotten by coincidence too close to your rotors, it sounds like something simple so if you have no luck and send it to a shop make sure its an honest one a bad mechanic will sell you the whole ship with a bunch of crap you don't need.
