Default fan belt woooes!

I'm going to replace the fan belt on my truck when I do the EGR delete ... has any body done there belt? I was told that I need a set of special wrenches to take the fan off of the water pump pulley. Also while I'm there I'm going to replace the pressure spring in the high pressure fuel pump I've heard the stock pring gets weaker as the miles increase on the truck and that by 100k the spring is about 40% weaker in that it has lost about 40% of it's tension and therefore fuel pressure to the injectors becomes inconsistant. BD makes a spring replacement for this that maintains it's tension and maintains constant fuel pressure well beyond the stock springs life, it's a simple install but on the 04' you need to remove the t-stat housing to do so... nows a good time for a fresh t-stat also........hmmm. thanks for reminding my self to do that too. has any body heard of the spring thing or the special wrenches for the fan? this is going to happen as soon as I gather ALL of my parts.

Get a 1/2" breaker bar as long as you can afford. Look for the hole in the idler arm, insert the breaker bar and release tension on the belt. Route the belt per the underhood sticker and use the breaker bar to move the idler arm so you can place the belt over the arm.

I can't use a breaker bar on mine, since I have the dual alternators the lower tensioner is designed so it's nearly impossible to get a breaker bar on it. You can literally just grab the belt and pull up on it to back the tensioner off, then just slip the belt off the alternator and you've released all the tension. Put it back on the same way. I just had both of my belts/tensioners/pulleyes and alternators off of my truck to do the banjo bolts. It's not that difficult. A little tight quartered on the dual alternator trucks for sure though.

Why would you need to remove the fan in order to change the belt?

I have heard of the spring. Couldn't hurt. Some guys use a BB as a spacer on the stock spring, and some just literally pull the stock spring apart to stretch it out. I think I'd just use a new OEM one or do the BD one like you're talking about. I have heard that the stocker gets weak, but honestly I haven't seen any first hand issues about it... most people would never think to change that.

I agree I would not have thought about it either BUT a friend of mine who just spent a bunch of money having his injector pump replaced told me about it, the thought of just strecthing the spring sort of freaks me out, the stocker gets weak after awhile and for 20$ bucks a new after market spring looks like a better solution to me. I pulled my belt off last night.....I grabbed the belt between the alt. and the tensioner gave a good tug and flipped the lever UNDER the tensioner which holds the tensioner in place while I slipped the belt off. it took alittle work to thread the new belt into place if I had taken my air box off it would have much easier to put the new belt into place. still it only took me about 15 mins to do.. not bad. now for the fun part.. removing the EGR..intake and oil cooler, turbo up pipe and radiator flush. may as well, while I'm in there it's all going to be inspected and cleaned. I can't wait, it will be an adventure. the whole thing would be soooo much easier though if they had just left alittle space under the hood..
