That is normal for the winter months. Buy some Diesel Fuel Therapy and put it in the gas tank before you fill up next to prevent gelling. Mine starts rough always in the mornings when its 38 degrees or below. Reason it does the high idle is because it has a sensor for when the engine is really cold so it goes into a higher idle to get it warmed up faster and function better when first driven

i am in toronto , ontario and if it is below freezing i have to plug it in

i also use the factory ford diesel additive 1/5 of a container to a full tank
, looks like honey

the one day i forgot and i had to start it cranking and holding the starter over, finaly started and it sounded like my Ducati Bike at idle

it was real rough then the fast idle kicked in then i was okay.....

I had the same problem, the dealer reflashed but said it could be the ICP. Turned out it was $200 from the dealer and I did the install. Fixed the problem completely!

Even in usually warm ft worth, my truck does it whenever its below 40 outside. And mine will idle up to 1000 rpm"s untill it warms up to about 200 degrees

I live in upstate NY and my truck will start without plugging it in down to 0 degrees F. Usually I plug it in when it gets to the 30 and lower just to aid starting, but sometimes I dont have the option. It never sounds like what you're describing.

It could be so many different things though. At the beginning of this season I was having similar issues and then finally an injector threw a code and it was replaced under warranty, made cold starting a lot easier.
