Not sure if you understand......

The pump could put out 100 but there is a "BYPASS" at the top/final filter. If the spring is weak it doesn't matter how much the pump 'can put out'..... It will bypass and you get whatever pressure is left.

basically, the BYPASS is the fuel pressure regulator.

I understand. If you have a weak spring, seems like replacing the spring would be the smart thing to do, especially since there is an upgraded spring available. I have read about the springs getting weak before 100k miles, but I haven't read of a single problem that anyone has related directly to that spring. Even if the spring gets weak, it's still usually the pump that can not keep up with the demand. Having a stiffer spring isn't going to help the pump get more fuel there. You are raising pressure, but at what cost? If pressure goes up, volume goes down, so what are you really gaining by doing this with a pump that can only put out a given amount of fuel?

Again, a fuel pressure gauge would be greatly beneficial. I think every 6.0 should have one!

They're just shimming the spring so it acts like a stiffer spring. You can also buy the stiffer spring, or some guys literally just stretch out the spring that is already in there. The BB just happens to be the size that works, and its inexpensive.

I had to change my fuel filters last weekend I figured it would be the best time to tear into the regulator NOTE do it when the engine has cooled off that top rad hose was kinda hot and that one torx bolt is right next to it anyway the BB trick it may have helped or it could have been the fresh filters

It just holds more pressure before opening and letting the extra go back to the tank. Some guys say it helps their throttle response, my guess is if it helps at all, your spring may have been completely shot.

I wouldn't waste my time with this if I didn't have an issue already. Your pressure increases, but if that happens this means your volume decreases.
