Default new to the forum and EGR question

Hi,
New to the forum but not to turning a wrench. I have been lurking here for awhile and just signed up the other day. I have done a search and cannot find an awnser. First about my truck. I am the 2nd owner 2007 F250 2wd daily driver. The original owner was an older guy that did not doing any mods to it other than air bags and a hidden hitch goose neck. 75,000 miles when I bought it. It now has 101,000. Have not had any problems with it until now. In Oct. of '13 the EGR was giving me problems. I could not afford a new one so I pulled the original one and cleaned it. Seemed to be working fine and I got the CEL to clear. well now it is being a problem again. CEL is on and engine not running like it did before. Code is showing EGR problems. Is there a way to just disable the egr in place with out going into limp mode? Can I pull the egr and fab a plate to cover the egr hole wile leaving the egr pluged in but out of the intake. I cannot aford an egr delet kit right now as my wife is a full time nursing student and I am the only one working. I read somewhere that to help clear out carbon you can run the truck at idle with the egr out and it will blow a lot of carbon and crap out. Is that right? This is a California truck. Dont know if that is important or not.
Thanks

What is probably happing is your EGR is sticking open if you truck is running a little off.
I wouldn't recommend just pulling it out and putting a plate on the top because then you will have the exact same problem or it might get worse. If you successfully cleaned it once I would try that or put a new one in if you can afford it.

If you are no stranger to pulling wrenches . What you can do its a lot of time but it will be dirt cheep. Pull your cooler off and put a 35 mm frost plug or something in the end of your cooler that will stop the exhaust gas from getting in to the EGR system. Then as long as the EGR valve still moves up and down the computer will think it all good .

Default EGR cleaning

I have gone through a couple on my 04, each of them were pretty bad. I did learn that you can take a cap of a spray can, (paint can top, brake cleaner top, etc) and fill it with carb cleaner. set the egr in it just like it is installed on the engine. CAUTION -- USE JUST ENOUGH CARB CLEANER TO SUBMERGE UP TO THE VENT HOLE. You dont want the cleaner going into the electronics part. You can let that soak for a couple hours or more. It makes it easy to get the carbon off

Hope the cleaning tip helps

Seafoam makes a good carbon cleaner. It's difficult to find but it makes carbon gooey then u can use brake cleaner to rinse it off. I used it on new intake when I got it and let it soak. Was impressed with results, carbon is not easy.
