Question Need Help - Oil in Turbo

Hello, I am new to the whole diesel thing and I need some help. I have a 2005 Excursion with the 6.0L in it. I am having a little lose in power and was told to check my turbo. I pulled the intake hose from the front of the turbo to check for play in the shaft to make sure the bearings were OK. They appear to be, but I found about a teaspoon of oil laying in the bottom of the housing. What does that mean?

Check for oil in your exhaust. If so its more than likely your turbo is shot

Should I check at the turbo or at the exhaust tip?

There is plenty of carbon build-up on the exhaust tip. I let it run for a few minutes then gave it some gas and white smoke came out. What would oil in my exhaust look like?

It will be wet in the exhaust tip. I had oil in my exhaust tip and was blowing white smoke. Ended up being the turbo, oil cooler and EGR.

Oil in the turbo and in all the intercooler tubes is perfectly normal, there is a breather from the drivers side valve cover that plumbs into the intake tube right before the turbo, this is the same as the PCV valve in a car, it helps create a vacuum in the crankcase promoting a better ring seal. the cummins just has a tube dumping out the side of the lifter cover but the EPA kind of frowns on pumping oily smoke to the atmosphere anymore.
Again the oil is in every single 6.0 out there, there is a mod to eliminate it but it is not necessary.
I would look into cleaning the EGR valve, they can get clogged up and it will cause poor performance.
I would also test the FICM, there is a "how to" at the top of the 6.0 section.

OK thanks, I will try cleaning the EGR vavle and test the FICM. I hope I can clean and repair as opposed to replace.
