I'm already planning on welding egr closed.

Doing oil cooler.

Headstuds and gaskets.

Serpentine.

Anything else you can think of while I'm in here playing around?

Are you having the heads machined for flatness, valve job would also be required..Make sure you install a coolant filter to protect that new oil cooler.

Yes, what Bob said. Waterpump maybe while you're in there?

Yea I'm going to look for I think caterpillar fluids. Very similar minus the silica content. Heads were borderline out of tolerance so I sent em off for surfacing.

Keep the EGR valve handy, I took mine out only to find that the strategy needed to see it for proper VGT cycling. If you haven't done it already, cab off would be a great time to do a 3.5" or 4" down pipe.

Mdub had some interesting information on how much silica is actually in coolant. While I don't recall the exact amount, it was minuscule. I spoke to machinist and found out that casting sand in ALL motors is more common than what most people think. Hence Bob's recommendation for the coolant filter.

Agreed, everyone blames the silicate, but it's hardly anything. There is tons of casting sand from the blocks too, since they're sand cast. Either way a coolant filter is fine.

I'm doing all of the same work here (cab off though!) and I'm going with Ford Gold Coolant again... just to say I did.

I just finished the same project. I learned that the water pump was actually one of the most reliable parts on a 6.0 so if it hasn't faulted i wouldn't touch it. i would recommend dummy plugs and standpipes. Also, while everything is apart, i would take your turbo apart and clean it. Make sure you read about it first so you can mark the turbo so it goes back together clocked the same, but when i pulled my turbo apart to clean it i unfortunately found that it was days from grenading due to insane wear on the plate that actuates the turbo veins and as we know a grenading turbo takes your motor with it. It was unfortunate that i had to buy a new turbo but a definite plus that i didn't blow my motor and am now running a brand new powermax turbo! also, check EVERYTHING. you will be very sad if you didn't connect a ground on the back of the motor or something stupid like that, check the fuel lines, one of mine bent and i didn't even realize it till i was putting it back together and of course it was midnight when i realized it and had to wait until the morning to get a new line and finish putting my truck back together! Take the extra time so you can avoid the headaches later!

How is the 6.0 water pump considered reliable? The plastic impeller fins fall apart and crack all the time. You may not even notice it when you pull it out, but when they crack and they're spinning, they flex out of the way and hardly push any coolant. I'm putting a metal blade Alliant unit in mine. If it was a reliable part, you know damn well bulletproof diesel wouldn't have went through the trouble to make one... they focus on all of the weak points of the 6.0. As for the turbo failing... I don't see how that would take your motor out either, unless the oil seal failed and it ran away eating the oil out of the turbo line... highly unlikely, but I don't see a grenading turbo taking out your engine. If anything even made it into the piping, seems like it would get stopped up at the intercooler. Most of the time pieces just get blown out the exhaust though.

I think he means that stuck vanes in the VGT system can result in over boost and blown head gaskets... if that isn't what he means than I am confused as well

Now that could make sense, but after owning a 6.0 for around 6 years, I hardly consider blown headgaskets, "taking the motor out." It's now just yearly maintenance LOL
