Without gauges, you're playing Russian Roulette with your truck. Whether you get a Scan Gauge II from Auto Zone, or an Edge CS/CTS monitor, you need to know what's going on with your truck. Both are going to require an EGT probe of some sort and a fuel psi is nice to have, not sure if Edge CS/CTS support fuel psi.
Anyway, what to look for:
1. Shutting down above 400* EGT (EGT Exhaust gas temp) can coke the oil in the turbom hence an EGT gauge.
2. Don't pound the throttle below operating temperature say 188*~195* range. You won't get max power from a cold engine, and it can lead to problems later.
3 Greater than 15* split between ECT and EOT at highway cruise (70mph) on flat ground can indicate a clogged oil cooler. (ECT engine coolant temp/EOT engine oil temp) A clogged oil cooler can lead to other problems.
4. PERSONALLY, a 5000 mile oil change interval is a waste of money. I did the factory 7500 for several years, and I have oil analysis reports to support my recent step to 10K. I DO NOT recommend this interval without an oil analysis.
These are my top things to look for. There are several threads about what mods work best, I recommend reading over the Performance section for that.
SCT or NOTHING for power programmers!
