The issue is they can be in a number of different places.

First place is up under the dash behind the radio. You have to get down with a flash light. You are looking for a small box with a sticker on it with numbers.

Then you have in the rear under the panel behind the spare tire IIRC. Finally I think behind the glove box one was found as well.


It seems there was a lot of variation where this box was mounted for various years and even then thru different models and package options.

But if you do not mind spending about 20 mins pushing numbers. There are only 5 buttons on that key pad. That is no where near enough for any real security. The extra number per pad does nothing except give more potions for the same button sequence. Os if you take Excel and runa macro to exploit all possible variation starting at one end thru to the other you will find it. Comes out to 3129 key presses but only if the very last one happend to be your code and the odds of that are small.

So here is the what you do:

Lets relable the buttons for only 5 digits one each. lets go odd 1,3,5,7,9. So left to right first far left key 1 last right key 9.

Here is the sequence just start pressing until you get unlocked then work back 5 numbers from the last you pressed. ACtually I guess if you ahve your own code programed as well as the factory there will be two but only the factory will work for programing:

Here is some instruction I found to Cut and paste as I do not want to dig thru all my notes to find my info. Now just remember that the 2000-2001 did not have the auto lock on/off feature thru the key pad IIRC


1. Erase any old codes by entering the factory code.(buttons will light up)
2. Press 1/2 button within 5 seconds.
3. Press 7/8 and 9/0 buttons at the same time within 5 seconds.

To set new code:

1. Enter factory code (numbers will light up)
2. Press 1/2 button within 5 seconds.
3. Enter personal 5 digit code(decide beforehand) within 5 seconds of each previous one.
To unlock all the doors,press the 3/4 button within 5 seconds of the driver door unlocking.
To lock all doors and set alarm system,press 7/8 and 9/0 at the same time.
To disarm or reset a triggered alarm,just enter personal or factory code.

Do not set a code with five of the same consecutive numbers. It's too easy for thieves to figure out.

Deactivating and Activating Autolock

To deactivate the "autolock":
With all doors and tailgate closed but NOT locked,and ignition OFF.
1. Enter 5 digit code
2. While holding 7/8 button in, press and release the 3/4 button.
3. Release 7/8 button
The horn will chirp once if the "autolock" was deactivated
or two times if "autolock" was activated.

To reactivate the system,repeat steps 1 thru 3

Alternate Method To Deactivate And Activate Autolock

Do steps [1] through [5] (below) within 30 seconds or you'll have to do it over. If you have to do it over, wait 30 seconds between attempts.
Close all doors securely.

1.Turn the ignition key to ON.

2.Press the power door UNLOCK control THREE times.

3.Turn the ignition key from ON to OFF.

4.Press the power door UNLOCK control THREE times.

5.Turn the ignition key back to ON .The doors should lock and unlock.

6.Press the power door UNLOCK control. The horn should chirp ONCE to confirm successful switching of the autolock system.

Sure. But I did make one mistake you do need to have at least 2 programed keys already. If you only have one you need to go either to a dealer or a locksmith as they have the program to work it as well. The way I was thinking of with one key is if you have the Auto Enginuity Software which if you have one key you can program the rest. Actualy if you plan to ever do any real work or trouble shooting on your Excursion or any vehicle for that matter that is OBDII you should get that software.

TO save money get your key on ebay for about 10-12

If you do have at least 2 keys here is how to do it. Also this is a great way if you have given out a key and did not get it back or have had a key stolen. You can have a total of 8 key programed. 2 are to put the PATS in Program mode. You need to have all keys with you that you have already programed as well as the ones you want to program. When you do go in progam mode all keys other than the first 2 ids are erased so you need to redo all of them plus any you add.

JUST AN FYI you should always keep at least 3 keys that way if you ever loose one you still have 2 to enter the PATS program with.


1. Insert and existing (working) key into the ignition cylinder.
2. Turn the ignition cylinder ON (RUN NOT START) and back to OFF. Ignition should stay on for at least ONE SECOND.
3. Remove the existing key and, within TEN seconds, insert a second working key and turn it to ON (RUN) and the back OFF. Ignition must be in ON for at least ONE second, but no more than TEN seconds. Remove the key.
4. Insert the new key before TWENTY seconds have elapsed and turn it to ON (RUN). Leave it the ON position for at least ONE second and turn back to OFF.
5. The security light will light up for THREE seconds to indicate that the new key has been successfully programmed.
6. To program additional keys, repeat steps 1 through 5

Here is another way it was written up as well:

Programming a PATS key:

1. Place first already programmed key in the keyway. Turn the ignition from OFF to ON (RUN) without starting the vehicle, for at least 1 second and then switch to OFF.

2. Within 5 seconds, insert your second already programmed key in the keyway. Turn the ignition from OFF to ON (RUN) without starting it, for at least 1 second and then switch to OFF.

3. Within 10 seconds of turning the ignition lock cylinder to OFF, insert the new key into the keyway. Turn the ignition from OFF to ON (RUN) without starting it, for at least 1 second and then switch to OFF.

The theft indicator light should go on for three seconds, after which the key will start the vehicle. Repeat this process, from the beginning, for each new key to be programmed.



How about if you want to add more of those remotes you know the FOBs ot unlock lock set your horn off remotes.

I have not tried this one out personally yet so someone can confirm this is correct for the remotes.

Same thing as above in that you need to have all your remotes plus the new ones. But you only need one Key this time and no min of remotes.

1 -- have ALL fobs on hand, including those which might already be programmed correctly. The programming will "erase" your old ones.

2 -- Unlock the doors. Put the key in the ignition, and turn from "Off" to "ACC" eight times in under 10 seconds. The doors will lock. Leave key in the ACC position

3 -- Program the fobs by pressing any key on the fob. Do this for each fob. The doors locks will lock/unlock

4 -- Turn the key to Off. Locks will lock/unlock, and you are out of programming mode.

5 -- Test all remotes.

6 -- With the money you have saved, take your spouse out to supper.

 

When you have a stock X ( meaning no Chip) If your theft light blinks fast your PATs system and PCM ( vehicle's computer) are no longer in sync/ not recognizing each other. You will need to reset the PATS system.

* THEFT LIGHT (on Excursions) - If the theft light flashes rapidly and the vehicle won't start, the Passive Anti-theft system (PATS) will need to be reset. To reset the PATS, perform the following steps:


•Turn the key on, but do not attempt to start the vehicle.
•Wait for the theft light to quit flashing rapidly. This should take about 45 seconds, after which the THEFT light will flash multiple times about every 3 seconds.
•Turn the key off and remove the key from the ignition for 30 seconds.
•Insert the key and turn the ignition to the ON position.
•The THEFT light should illuminate for about 5 seconds and then go out.
•PATS System should now be reset
•You should be able to start your vehicle normally


try the above and you should be squared away.

For those with chips it can be normal for the theft light to flash AFTER starting for a few mins but should cut off after that while driving. It should never cause a no start issue. If the later does happen follow the above instructions to see if that fixes it first.
