njneer1 05-09-2010 09:21 AM

2MuchJunk 05-09-2010 12:12 PM

Hey I want one. Just got to find the right deal on the right truck. Haven't figured out what all I need to check or best years to buy yet.

If you want to mod it............. go with 2000 .......last year with forged rods

2MuchJunk 05-10-2010 10:08 PM

It's not going to be heavily modified. In fact my wife is going to drive it. I guess you can only put a diesel truck girl in a minivan so long. 2000 seam's to be the best year for the 7.3 or at least thats the one everyone want's.

njneer1 05-11-2010 11:54 AM

That's what I though when I bought our Excursion for the wife......you will not be able to leave it alone.....mine is a 2000 ....no major problems yet........got an oil leak up top....HPOP or turbo pedestal......gotta get that fixed...but it's not bad yet

2MuchJunk 05-11-2010 05:42 PM

Yea I know I wont be able to leave it alone but if I start with leaving it stock to begin with then I will modify it some. If I start with modifying it in mind I will end up way overboard.

Benjamin 05-11-2010 05:55 PM

SPLTANK on here is a friend of mine and he has a 7.3 Excursion..... he is a busy man so i don't think he post much at all..... mainly reads.

CSIPSD 05-11-2010 06:02 PM

My Excursion is my wifes really... I dont get to drive it...:dang:

LOL

2MuchJunk 05-11-2010 06:29 PM

Thats what will probably happen to me. I keep telling her when we get one I am giving her my old Chevy and driving the Excursion. I don't think its going to go over that easy though.

You're gonna need a tuner to get decent fuel mileage.....well worth the $$......plus you'll need gauges for it if you tow

I've been gone for quite a while. Work, family, team, all taking up all of my time...

After much soul searching, reading, research and debate, I think I've finally decided on my next rig.

I'm in the same boat as 2muchjunk:(

A diesel excursion will fit my needs perfectly! (guess they don't make a duramax Suburban?).

So now I have to find one at the right price. And I too have no freakin' idea what I'm looking at?

Let me ask a stupid question right off the bat and feel free to :bat:me if the need arises.

I've seen threads where you have to pull the cab to do some of the repairs/mods on the pick 'em ups....

Is the same thing required of the Ex? That's gotta be a major PITA!

If you don't mind, I'll probably be lurkning in this section more than anywhere else on the forum and hoping to learn a few things

Thanks:c:

njneer1 05-16-2010 05:59 PM

I've never heard of that on an Excursion.....might be the newer stuff

2MuchJunk 05-16-2010 06:14 PM

Thats one thing I am wondering about the 6.0. I know on the 6.0 super duty you have to pull the cab to do any work. It's not that bad of a job because ford designed it to be pulled off. The only problem is you need a 2 post lift and I don't have one of them in my driveway. I don't think you have to do that with the 7.3. So I am thinking of going to the old reliable 7.3.

Thanks Junk.

That's exactly what I was talking about:c:

I too think I'm going to look for a 7.3. Seen plenty of them around and they seem to have a great track record. Won't be a DD, so don't have to worrk too much about fuel economy. It'll by primarily a team truck to tow the boats and such.

Mdub707 05-17-2010 12:23 AM

You dont need to pull the cab with a 6.0, it's just easier to do. On the trucks, a good tech can have the cab off in 45 minutes. The excursion is only two more chassis bolts and the tail lights need to be unplugged. Not all that terrible really. You can still pull the motor out if you need to, just easier to leave the motor in place and pull the cabs.:tu:

2MuchJunk 05-17-2010 01:41 AM

I hear that the cab is easy to get off. I just always manage to have to much stuff in my shop to get anything else in it so I end up working in the driveway. I also don't have a 2 post lift and I would have to take a lot of steroids to lift the body off one of them.

With a 7.3 I just think I could sleep better at night.

That's my problem. No lift and not wanting to have to depend on someone else to get the jobs done.

Thanks again.

7.3 it is I think:)

drewkeen 07-05-2010 04:03 PM

On the other hand 6.0 models seem to be going for less than 7.3 models with similar miles on them.

Very true. Thats kind of what has slowed me on the look for the Excursion. I wan't one with a 7.3 but they want a fortune for them. I guess that tells you what the owners of 7.3 powered Excursions think of there ride. Don't get me wrong I still want one bad just waiting to find the right deal.

drewkeen 07-05-2010 05:53 PM

I went out and bought a gasser Ex with a bad engine to do a cummins swap for this reason. I can build one with a cummins for less than I can buy a 7.3 one for. To me the cummins is easier to work on and also gets better fuel economy.

2MuchJunk 07-05-2010 06:08 PM

I agree but my wife won't let me put a Cummins in one even though I told her it would be cheaper she just don't seam to like the Cummins and I am not going to make her drive something she don't like.

Hello all, I drive a 2000 7.3 with 310,000 miles on the clock. Completely stock, just slightly bigger tires-285's. Runs like it was new (until a few weeks ago when an electrical issue came up, but I'm working on it). I love my Ex. How many guys can say that!

njneer1 04-15-2011 09:21 PM

Welcome Lefty !!

I bought DA BUSs` EX.

Mods so far, Bilsteins, Home made Tymar, sway bar, airbags/ compressor, trans gauge and gauge pod for pyro and boost. I straight piped it but man is it loud with a load, might be putting the magnaflow back.

Da Bus put on Bendix industrial brakes, what do you guys know about these? I had trailer with a 7K load on it and had trouble stopping ( thought the pedal was going to go thru the floor!)
My work van (2500 Chevy) same trailer no problems stopping (trailer brakes are broken)
Secondly, the truck floats quite a bit with a load, well see what kind of issue that will be , I`m picking up a 12K boat/ trailer on Sunday and driving 4 hours home.

Custom light bar coming Monday!!

ICDEDPPL 04-17-2011 09:51 PM

Thanx!

Well it tows like a champ, bouncy with 30psi in the bags but all that about stopped with about 60psi.

Lie-o -meter (which actually was pretty accurate when I hand calculated the one time)

Had me at 23mpg empty all highway and 14mpg towing

I think thats probably about 4-5mpg too high
