Default Excursion front suspension troubleshooting

I purchased 2004 psd excursion last month. I have 2 problems. First the steering feels vague. Vague is not really the best term but how do you describe constantly correcting when going in a straight line. Does not have any play but just feel like I'm workin at driving straight. I have 2 other expeditions where the steering is very smooth. Yes they are smaller but is my only reference. I suspect I need to get use to driving a boat.

Second I have a feint clunk up front when I hit bumps. I jacked up the truck and nothing is loose. I suspected shocks so replaced both. Still getting the same sound. Last owner had replaced upper/lower ball joints.8k ago.

I'm out of ideas but am not yet ready to take it to the dealer.

Help

Matt

Found the steering damper looks like it has been leaking. Picked up a replacement at Autozone and will install once it stops raining/snowing. Will report back if it helps.

Have someone sit in vehicle with engine off and move steering wheel back and forth while youre under it and look for play in your steering joints. The clunking over bumps sounds like worn out sway bar end links. Youd be better off buying a good steering damper or even goin to a dual damper setup really helps alot.

I replaced the steering damper it solved most of the hunting but not the clunking sound.

Agree with you about checking the sway bar end links. I can't find anything loose when I jack up one corner at a time. I'll see if my local diesel shop can find it when I take it in for an EGR "repair" next week.
