Default lost my overdrive

well it seems as one problem gets fixed another surfaces. i just had some leaky fuel lines that i fixed today and went to take the truck for a test drive and something is seriously messed up in the transmission. you can start it in drive and it will take off in first gear but then you have to manually shift it it to second gear. when you shift it back in to drive it stays in second gear and it wont come out. occasionally it shifts in to 3rd gear (overdrive) but its like its in neutral untill you punch the gas and then it grabs slightly. its almost like the torque converter is slipping but it dosent act like that going from first to second. it grabs fine in those gears. idk if it is having kickdown cable problems or something more than that. the truck ran fine untill the fuel leak and the fuel was running down the transmission bellhousing, im not sure if diesel got in there and screwed things up or what but i think the truck is trying to head in to early retirement. might just have to throw a manual trans in to it and forget the automatic. let me know what you think is going on, the truck is a 1984 f250 with a 6.9l diesel and stock trans. any advice would be great. thanks!

My buddy got his dodge hung up a while back, when he finally got it out he had lost reverse when he got home, then it got to where he had to let off the gas to get it to shift and finally it just stopped working all together. He spent 1500 to get it rebuilt...

I can't tell ya whats wrong with, I don't have any experience with autos. If the trans needs rebuilt thou sounds like a good time to switch over to a ZF-5 and have a 5 Speed !

Best of luck to ya!

how much do you think it would cost to throw a ZF-5 in there and call it good. ive always wanted it to be a manual and if its going to cost close to the same to put another auto in there i'd just rather it be a manual. get more out of my money. i just know that theres a lot of work that goes in to those auto to manual trans swaps.

first, you have a c6 trans. no overdrive. i would check fluid level in neutral with motor running, and also check your kickdown lever, make sure you did not unhook it when installing the return lines. it runs from IP to trans.

I was kind of kidding about the ZF-5 (not completely) I think I saw some threads around here somewhere about swapping one in. I think there is something about needing to swap to a solid mass flywheel and some other stuff. I'm sure there are some more knowledgeable people around here than me (my main tools I use to get the job done are a hammer, drill and some JB weld ). It would probably be easier to swap in a T-19 tranny that was stock on the 6.9, but I don't know if the trans tunnel was the same on manual and auto trucks so there might be some fabrication there.

I've never done it so I can't tell ya how much money and work would be involved in something like this, but I'd bet there is somebody round here that's done it. I'm in the mindset that with enough money, skill and time anything can be done...
