Default Ford 6.9 Surging dieing

Ok, I have a 1985 ford with 6.9. I thought my fuel filter was dead replaced it, truck started fine, drove it into the pasture started surging which is nothing new it does this in the winter or when I haven't started it in a couple of weeks. But then it died and I couldn't restart the engine. Ran down the batteries put it on the charger nothing. Ok let it sit for the last week in the pasture figured the fuel lift pump is gone, went bought one was going to put it in but decided what the hay ill try it again. Started like a champ drove it up to the house started surging and died again. Its like it is running out of fuel but can't figure that tank is over half full and the fuel filter is 3/4 full? Any help would be appreciated, new glow plugs controller and oil air and fuel filter in the last 1000 miles.

Joe

Soounds like you gotta major air intrusion, start at your IP and then if that is all tight and good, go to your injectors, and caps, if all thats in good order and no leaks, check from both tanks and follow it up from them.

Chasing same problem with mine, narrowed down to between tank and filter housing. Check the lines especially the metal ones under the cab inside the frame rail and the one from the lift pump to the other side that's on the engine cross member for corrosion and leaks. Second the fittings on the tank switching valve on the frame rail as well as the plastic type lines. Third is the water separator on the firewall, the drain likes to stick open so either put a bolt in the drain tube like I did or bypass it. Plan on working on mine here in a few weeks so I'll let you know what I find, my guess is it's the metal lines since they are 27 years old and quite rusty.

check all your lines and if those check out it might be the fuel supply pump.

I think your fuel switch could be faulty as well.... not allowing fuel to come through at the rate needed and starves the motor of fuel.....
