It was my understanding the turbo 7.3 IDI's really didn't put down much overall power above what a non-turbo did, the whole idea behind that was that it didn't LOSE power when it went up in elevation.

Reading this thread makes my head hurt.

I think people got their opinions down, maybe some people learned somethings, maybe not. IMO, if you wanna run a turbo on a nonturbo engine, do your homework and be prepared for "carnage" if you push too far. Same thing if you want to increase performance on your factory turbocharged truck. On that note, I think I'll unsubscribe from this thread. Y'all have fun

The numbers were for illistrative purposes only..... not concrete numbers.... But if you have ever pulled the heads off of just about any diesel out there you would see the piston with a very large dip and a point in the middle of the piston.... that dip is called the " Quench Bowl " .... thats what can be a determining factor in the comperssion ratio..... I work on detroits,cat,cummins,paccar,mercedes,perkins,...ET C.... they almost all have the same type of set up.... the internatial 6.9&7.3 are the few different ones and while they are a great runner .... power is not in the cards from what I have gathered...... unless you have ..REAL DEEP POCKETS.... and lotts of time I would think.... but over all I agree this thread is getting too much.... ya'll can come to my shop... I will show ya what I'm talking bout....

Threads like this remind me of why I spend 99% of my time here in the badlands, the dip in the piston that you're calling a "quench bowl" is actually designed for controlling the shape of the flame front, same idea as the ricardo cups in the piston on an IDI.
Most stock DI engines run 17-17.5:1 compression whereas our IDIs (turbo or n/a) stock run 21.5:1 compression ratio.

And, OP means original poster, meaning that it pertains to the person who started the thread.
