Default Smoking and weak 7.3L

Hi,

I just bought a 92 F250 w/ a 7.3L non-turbo engine with about 150k miles on the motor, the test drive seemed fine but when I drove it home I have a steep hill up to my house (700ft elevation change in 1/2 mile) and it was smoking pretty bad up the hill and I could only get 3rd gear about 35mph up the hill.

Was wondering if anyone had any suggestions to a: limit the smoke and b: does the power sound right going up the hill? He told me it would pull an 1800lb loaded camper up I-90 cascade mountain pass @ 45mph, but I have to not believe that at this point.

Thanks guys!

It was night time, but I'm pretty sure it was thick black smoke when I was on it and greyish when i was backing off.

Is a "flat" the same as 1 full turn?

From what I've read turning it in will make it run richer, what if I make it run too lean?

pop off your air filter and see if there is oil in there. You may be getting blowback which means your piston rings are going bad. I am going through that situation right now with my new 1990 7.3idi.

Yeah , bad air filter can do that .... i bought a 92 dually auto truck 7.3 idi, dove 65 miles and burned 2/3 tank of fuel........ knew i was looking at some serious issues..... pulled the air filter and it was amazing that the truck ran at all...... was much better after a new filter and a muffler delete, along with syn. oil change and some cetain boost..and atf... but was stil only managing 16 mpg's ...... went back and got my 87 back..... thank god they hadnt sold it......
