Default General questions

I am new to owning a diesel truck, and i have some questions to help with my knowledge since im having some issues.

i picked this truck up in reno, nv and drove it home to angels camp ca, over teh hwy 88 pass just for reference

#1 driving up inclines , noticed it was dropping back in speed and power, shifted from 4th to 3rd gear on the tranny seemed way to high on rpms to down shift, but in 4th gear she was dropping back... not sure why. wife said i was spitting smoke out the pipe too when it was climbing.

#2 seems to stall out, takes a bit of starting fluid and stuff to get going again. not sure why. fuel gauge had been deemed unreliable so i tried putting more diesel in, took half a gallon ( mind you i filled up both tanks in nevada and was still on the first tank) and the filler neck spit back at me, tank was full??

#3 cant get the truck to switch from front to rear tank, most likely electrical?

#4 headlights cut in and out on truck while running lights stay on. can push high beam floor switch lights stay on for a while. then cut out again.. any advice?

so far these are my questions. i would appreciate any advice

the fuel tank switch might have some problems. mine just flat broke off the dash but you can pick them up in the junk yard. there are plenty of them

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

then again my truck is a 94 and yours is 86 so it will be different.

yours is most likly the pollac switch under the truck on the framerail. ford only item.

when u was driving it up that hill was there any load on the truck(trailer?)

headlighs is the head light switch in the dash. replace with new.

depending on the smoke, it is normal.

are there ANY wet spots around injectors? also how many miles are on it? any idea on if or when the pump and injectors were changed?

no load on the truck at all.
apparent mileage is 06,xxx on the odometer, not sure tho if its 100 or 200k
ill look at the injectors in the morning and get back to you on that.
as far as when the injector pump work was done, i dont knwo gotta be fairly recent, looks like a brand new unit and stuff

if the pump is new but it still runs like crap, it needs to be timed.
