Default Fuel Injection Pump wires

Greetings:

I have a 93' 7.3 idi non-turbo. My question is: what do the black wires do that come out of the pump and are socket connected to wires that run into a wiring harness? They 'disappear' then cuz I don't know where they go from there.
Reason I asked is because I tried to start the engine 2 days ago. It instantly started, ran for about 3 sec. then instantly died. Crank as I may it would'nt start. No smoke came out as I was cranking which made me think engine was not getting fuel. Being the lazy and cheap bumb that I am, I looked for something super simple that might be the problem. I did'nt see any leaks of fuel around the injection pump so I disconnected the wires coming out of it. I noticed inside the socket there was is a yellow colored goo. I did'nt know what it was ,probably some kind of anti-corrosion jell, so I cleaned off and plugged socket back together. To my suprise the engine not only started instantly but runs better now since I've owned the rig ( 2 years ). The engine quiter, smoother and stronger. It goes up steep hills now w/o the usuall down shifting (auto trans.) If it was'nt the goo it might be a broken wire not making a good connection, which I'll fix.

I'm not totally convienced that those wires were the problem but it seems too much of a coincidence. The performance results of the engine of whatever happend are too great.

Do these wires go into a computer or some sensor? I thought 93' idi had no computer except for the transmission.
These wires are small and don't look heavy enough to supply high ammounts of power to anything. They look to be about 14-16 gauge.

Would sure like to know what they do.
Help if you can PLEASE.

if you are talking about the 2 plugs on the driverside of the injection pump, the rear one is your cold advance, the front one will be the shut off solinoid.
