Default Cold start up

Is it common for the 94 stock turbo IDI when it is first started to smoke white and run rough? It idles just fine and doesnt smoke after the engine is warmed up to where the temp gauge is just off the cold mark. This truck has new injectors and glow plugs (which I always wait until the wait to start light goes off).

Forgot to mention that the smoke smells like diesel fuel and not sweet like coolant.

White smoke on a cold start is normal, it just hasn't warmed up enough to completely burn the fuel. How rough is it idling though? I have a bad glow plug in mine right now and it shakes pretty good for 10-15 seconds when started cold.

Something for you to try. I have noticed that just because the WTS light goes off, it doesn't mean the plugs are done heating. Watch your battery guage, the needle will dip pretty low while the plugs are heating and come back up when done. Wait for the battery guage to return to normal then try and start it. It may just start a little bit smoother.

Well I just replaced a battery in the truck. With one bad battery will that cause the glow plugs not to heat as well?

As for the rough idle when cold ill try to get a sound clip of it. *an after thought*

How bad is the timing of the injection pump to do on the IDI? I went to school for diesels but that was for tractors.
