rear axle yolk

Default rear axle yolk

i need to replace the yolk on my rear axle cuz it broke, if i take that nut off and remove the yolk will i have to reset the pnion depth or bearings?

there is a crush sleeve in there. do not tighten with inpact gun. loosen and count the turns on the ratchet. then put the nut back on when done and tighten it that many turns. i hate rear axles.

is there any actuall technical data on this i was leaking out my yolk and had just tightened it up but i heard you can screw up your gears if you dont do it right

well with the crush sleeve, to properly set it, the carrier needs to be out. then tighten it till the proper bearing preload is set, IIRC is is 7 inch lbs of restance spining the pinion.

so what does backing it out and reseting it do? im not doubting you im just curious because i dont have the money to screw it up ya know?

can afect the bearing preload. to much and bearings will go out, to little and same thing. i hate crush sleeves.

my friend jus screwed up his rearend last night trying to change the pinion seal. he took off the pinion nut and couldnt get the yolk off so he put the nut back on but didnt put it back on with the right tourq and drove about 2 miles and the real axle locked up, now its gona cost him 600 to get the gears realigned, my advice it to eather jus let it leak and cheack it often or pay a profesional to change it for you.

thats kinda funny cuz a few years back i did a pinion seal, threw all caution to the wind snugged it up with a half inch breaker bar put 50 or so thousand k on it without an issue sold it and the guy still has yet to have an issue my advice just snug it up

hmmm... dont know that ill do that . but ill keep an eye on it dont have money to throw like that if something does go wrong it would be jusst my luck

well his rear end has been giving him a few problems with the pinion being "loose" and i thing taking the nut off and beating it with a hammer to get off made it worse.
