Default Gutless On The Highway..........

well here we go, i picked up my 85 F250 6.9 4 gear manuel 4x4 tuesday, drove it around a few days with no issues or problems, it's far from fast compaired to my 97 F250 4x4 gas truck, but its a diesel so i'm not expecting a rocket ship, i hooked up my 20 foot car trailer and headed down the highway, it has some weight in the trailer but nothing to worry about, my gasser F250 didn't have any issues pulling the same trailer and weight last week, but my 85 diesel couldn't stay at 75 kph on a slight grade to save it's life with the loud pedal planted to the floor, and for it to stay at about 75 kph on flate roads it had to be full throttle and lets just say the fuel gauge...... well it looked as if someone popped a hose off and the fuel was dumping out onto the ground. i took the trailer off the truck hit an open stretch and 85kph was the max i could get the oil burner to go...........

my question is, did i over estimate the usefullness of this truck to pull my trailer and this is about the norm for these trucks for pulling duties? i bought this truck to pull my trailer, it came with a plow but thats just a bonus, my gasser is for plowing, and before you ask, the plow is off the truck when i got the shock while looking at my speedo and fuel gauge.

is there a possible problem with the motor thats causeing the gutless issue? it has 323 xxxkms on the clock and i looked out the side and no smoke was puffing out the pipe. i had a 1990 F250 7.3 4x4 and never had an issue rolling 120 kph unloaded and it had just under 300 xxx kms on the clock. have the diesel gods frowned upon me and my truck?

thanks

your not goin much over 85 with it. the fuel thing could be because your just slammin on it and dumpin fuel. if you get it up to speed it'll do it just fine. i have an 85 f350 and i'm retiring the 6.9 and putting in a powerstroke. you may want to look at a turbo kit to get a bit more out of it

thanks for the fast reply, top speed of 85kph is unreal and i have to be at full pin to be there, but when it drops down to 60kph on the highway pulling my trailer it's a bit of a problem, and with the fuel just flying out the tank, the money i make running scrap metal will just go to fueling the truck, it's quite pointless.

Yeah truck will do OKAY towing. I know uphill mine kinda struggles. 3rd gear all the way sometimes 2nd. But it gets the job done. I tow an International 1066 pulling tractor, weighs 13,500 lbs.

Mines stick shift also, and I'm talking kilometers per hour not miles per hour, I'm a little further north up in canada, 43mph is what my truck is chugging along at, even unloaded just truck alone it struggles to stay at 50mph........ see my Issue......

Now I see your issue. I bet your injectors are bad.

ooh ya. thats bad. also how cold. is it? do you have winter diesel in there? the reason i ask is because if its been real cold like it has here the diesel will gel and it wouldn't be able to flow as good. maybe try a new fuel filter too. if you know a good local shop have them test your injectors. they're easy to get out. its either an inch wrench or inch and an eighth. injectors are relatively cheap for these engines too

Yesterday was maybe 20f not that cold, I just filled my front tank lastnight, I have an additive to put with the fuel maybe that will help, its the same fuel I run In my tdi golf and never have a problem with the car, no starting problems with the truck, didn't plug it in friday night, took four tries and she ran Saturday morning, short cracking, that last two tries it was trying to start but wouldn't catch. It also isn't dumping any smoke out the pipe, other then on start up, is it possible to see if The Injectors have bit the dust or is It only with a flow test or something to be sure?
