24 Volt system

24 Volt system
The hinge pins were a pain in the a$$! But, I finally got them with a little help from a preacher. I am getting a warn 18,000 lb winch for the old girl but, it requires a 24 volt system. Can I set that up with the batts. that I have or, do I need to get two more to set it up?

Crawler or anyone else have any idea's? I am trying to set this up for the winch ONLY!

You could easily add another battery in series, creating 24volts, then run only the winch off the 24 volt battery. The only thing I am unsure of is if the 12volt battery, and alternator, will properly charge the second battery. I like this idea as the 24 volt motor would be nicer to have. I may experiment with this at the shop later today.

24v is easy to setup with two 12v batts, problem is a "dead" 24v system is still at more of a charge than a fresh 12v system. That means the 24v system would have to be completely isolated from the 12v system. You would have to find a 24v alternator, if you are handy you could probably make a bracket and use a 24v alt off of some kind of heavy equipment on it. Easiest place would be where your AC is if you have it but seeing as you are in TX thats probably something to keep.

The 12v system wont keep the 24v charged. Hooking it into your 12v system at all wouldnt be good. By the way, ambulance packages had dual alternators. Not sure where the second alt was mounted but it might be worth looking into. From there im sure you could fab a way to put a 24v alt in its position.
