Default Need Idi factory turbo help

I need help with my 94 idi turbo diesel. It is a k motor and has 110000 miles. The thing smokes crazy when I start it up blue and white. It also starts really hard. I also need exhaust work as it ends at the downpipe. What should I do to stop the smoking and how can I get it to start easier. Is my exhaust situation a big problem? I just need some guidance as to where I should start with repairs? I'm new to diesels so maybe just a general run over of a basic tune up i need to do would help.

Thanks,

Matt

Sounds like you may have air intrusion and or need some new glow plugs. Check your return lines(hoses running between the injectors) to see if any are wet. If they leak, air gets in and your fuel flows away from the injectors. When you try to start it you have to wait for the fuel to build back up. A couple weak glow plugs will also make it difficult to start. Get a test light, hook the clip to the positive battery terminal and touch the other end to the top of each plug. If the light comes on, the plug works...at least a little bit. Only use Motorcraft plugs, the cheap plugs are prone to burning out quickly and swelling.

What do u think about my exhaust bing cut off at the downpipe should I use a 4 inch exhaust? Also, I've been told I may want to get new injectors. Have you heard anything about the stage ones for the idis or should I go a different route?

Your lack of exhaust wont hurt anything. A 3" exhaust will flow adequately, anything bigger and it's more for sound quality than function. I went with 4" and I dont regret it. If you are referring to the DPS stage 1 injectors, they will make more power(although not much), but also cause rough idle and constant smoke. I haven't run across anyone who was happy with them.

The G code injectors were used in factory turbo motors, they are an emissions type injector and the worst ones you can put in your motor. Pretty much any other OEM injector will work good, BB codes just happen to be more prevalent. Getting a set of injectors that are pressure matched is a good idea though.
