Default swapping transmissions

Hi, I have a 1985 Ford F350 with a 6.9L and a 4 speed. I want to swap to a ZF 5speed trans for the overdrive. I have a ZF out of a 1988, but it was bolted to a 460 gas engine. Will it bolt up, and/or what will I need to get it to bolt/mate up. The ZF is still bolted to the 460, so clutch and flywheel are there as well.

If I remember right, you have to use a ZF 5 from a diesel. Read through this: https://www.dieselbombers.com/ford-8...zf-5-swap.html Good luck.

Thank you for your reply. I am new to the diesel world. I have always messed with big block gas engines and have just gotten into the diesels, so I'm full of questions. How about the clutch and flywheel, will the set up off of the 4 speed fit the 5 speed or will the flywheel off of the 460 fit the 6.9. Would I need to get a different flywheel and clutch and if so, what/where is the best place to get these. I haven't pulled anything apart yet and just want to know what I will need so the truck will not be down as long. Will the bell housing of the 5 speed be too weak if I drill new holes?

it will work redrilling. many have done it.

flywheel off ur 4 speed will work, but need to get a clutch disk only for the 5 speed. use the 4 speed pressure plate.

use the adapter ring on the back of your idi as a template to redrill. the top two holes are in the correct location, just need to be opened up some. then bolt the adapter to the trans using those holes. then drill the other holes and bolt her in.
