i am working on a 86 ford with the 6.9 turbo diesel. ok, the engine is hard to start and it has tons of white smoke when you finely get it to idle, if you can get it to do that with out dieing. it has a Ats turbo kit the turbo is not sooling till it get on the rev limiter. the guy has just changed the the injection pump and filter. im not good with the engines.
any help would be much helpful

Does it smoke all the time, or just when cold? If it smokes all the time, I would imagine the timing is off. It should be timed after changing the IP as aligning the timing marks will usually just get you in the ball park. If it only smokes cold, then it sounds like a glow plug issue.

And that turbo is probably spooling, just not what a Cummins guy is used to.

Edit: If the pump and filter were just changed you'll probably have to run it a while to bleed all the air. That could be part of your idleing issue

OK thanks for the help, its smoking white all the time, and it also has a new lift pump or the one on the block. just talked to him and he said he also changed out the passenger side front 3 injectors and left the others. it is in time we tried that first thing. he has drove the truck with no problems. he said it just started jumping and jerking but no smoke, killed it when he got home and wouldn't start back. he changed all the stuff out and this this is what we got. it set for a year or two

Default Former Diesel Mechanic

I had the same problem with my 6.9 years ago. It happened when the sulfur was taken out of the fuel. I purchased a reman injector pump from IH and found out it was actually rebuilt by a company in town. After beating my head against the wall, being a Diesel mechanic even, I quit and had the IH dealer fix it. It was a faulty reman pump. Just a thought.
