Thats bad, thats very bad. You are not supposed to remove that cover. The timing is adjusted by loosening the IP and rotating it, not the gear. You dont usually want to adjust it more than a dimes width either. Does your truck still run at all?

made it not run at all. then i put the motor on top dead and put that gear back the way it was supposed to be. even after that it will run but takes forever to start and run like *** when it finally starts..... should i loosin the pump and move it a lil and see if that works???

From what I understand, there are two dots you need to align, one on the IP gear and one on the cam gear. If you get the motor to TDC you should be able to see the cam gear dot with a dental mirror so you can line them up(This is with the top cover removed). These motors shouldn't be timed by ear, you will need to take it to a shop with the proper timing meter once you get it aligned.
