Default How much oil, additives?

I need to change the oil in my truck(first diesel so bear with me through these noob questions) how much oil do I need to buy. It's hard to find 15-40 around here in anything smaller than a gallon jug.

I also have a small oil leak, 4-5 drops when parked after running. Is it safe to try and add some sort of stop leak? What about adding a quart of high mileage oil?

I've been working on gas motors for the last 12 years, and I'm afraid to try any of my old tricks on a diesel.

I would get some rottela oil to run in it. If you go to any real parts store they should be able to pull up the specs for you in the computer. As for stop leak I look at it like this... Stop leak is made to plug up the little holes that a leaking oil. What is to stop them from plugging up all the little passages inside the engine? Keep an eye on the level until you can fix it right.

Rotella huh? We stock that at work. Any reason to use the rotella over the delo 400? Just curious is all. I also just realized the owners manual is in my truck, guess I could check that out as well.

Chevron makes delo 400, alot of guys in my area use it in their duramaxes, it's probably a good oil, who knows, I use a synthetic Cenex oil and I get better mileage with it then I did with the synthetic Rotella, nothing on the truck has changed since i swapped oil brands just my .02

Holy hell, took 2.5 gallons of rotella to fill that sucker. I filled the oil filter with oil before installing it as well. Are the oil change intervals the same for a diesel as a car or can I go longer? I'm not sure what to put on my little window sticker.

You can run 5-7K with that oil in there. Just keep checking and see how much you are losing to determine if you want to fix it or not.

Off hand I know we stock the Rotella, Delo 400 and the Castrol Tection Extra. I have a part time job at an auto part store so I get 20% off. Which of those would you guys reccomend for my next oil change?

I've also narrowed down the leak, it's either the front crank seal or the front of the oil pan. It's a real light leak, but I'll keep tabs on it. I dont want anything bad happening to my new truck.
