Default 7.3 / 6.9 Max driveble hp & tq min $ Tell me what you think.

I sold ole faithfull (92 IDI 1/4 turn straight pipe)when she couldn't do better than 10mpg loaded pulling a trailer and load that was around 19,000lb. So I bought a newer (97) 460 efi that runs like a streak of sh#t but gets 12 empty and 6 loaded and won't even pull the same lb as the IDI. I know, and you don't have to say it, I F'd up. So heres the ? I'm going to buy another IDI but have heard that they are only good up to 300hp. Is this rwhp? How much TQ? I know how to make the HP on a IDI but most say go for the Moose Pump and marine inj's. I read the stock inj's are good for 35hp apiece, unless my math is bad that's 260 hp. Does this reflect turning the pump up? Or is this the limit that the injector can push regardless?

Please don't tell me to buy a PSD or a newer truck. I happen to really like the 6.9/7.3 IDI for it's ease and $ to operate. I don't need over 300hp but would like to see 250 & 600 FTlb.

Also which is better to build 6.9/7.3 I've heard the 6.9 will take more boost and abuse. I'm planning to rebuild a 92' to 94' truck and am willing/able to do the work myself but have little background in the spec's.

The IDI's are the kinda unknown motors if you get hooked up with the right companies heard the motors making up to the 1200hp range just how much you wanna do to it. it wouldnt be too difficult to get into the 300hp range.

The later model 6.9s are supposed to be stronger blocks I am building a 6.9 just because I scored one on the cheap but either way you should be good if your only aiming for the 250 300 range.

There is a limit to what the injectors can do but you can always send them into a good injector shop and have them mod'ed for ya. the Moose pump seems pretty cool but there is a few other shops around that can hook ya up on pumps.

Oh man! How things changes when it's raining. I've been stuck in my office for to long and just came accross a 1st gen turbo cummins auto truck complete driver w/ 200k runs/shifts good trucks worn-out for $1200.

Now I'm thinking sell the 460efi and 4spd auto and swap the CTD. Any thoughts.

Im a little confused, will the 7.3 liter injectors work in a non turboed 6.9 liter IDI? And what can i do to have around the 300 hp range w/o buying a complete turbo kit?
Thanks, any info helps

The 6.9 and 7.3 are the same engine blocks just one has bigger bucket holes then the other the injectors from a 7.3 wont work in a 6.9 unless you use the 7.3 fuel pump or have a equivalent fuel pressure as the 7.3 fuel injection pump. So to answer your question no they wont work but from the out side to the inside they are the same just one has different springs then the other.

so if i just put the 7.3 liter fuel pump on it then it would work? it wouldnt hurt the block at all?
how would i be able to increase the fuel pressure relatively easily?
And what can i do to get into the 250 or 300 hp range w/o braking the bank and w/o a complete turbo kit?

Well, The best way is just to get the 7.3 Fuel pump or just take your fuel pump in to a shop to have it tuned up to a 7.3 specs once again they are the same parts just tuned differently. Now my question to you is why do you want more Horse Power?

Jump on that... Throw a IC on it and you will pull all day at 250-300hp...
